Rude awakening :(

A few years ago we arrived at our resort via ME about 5:30 p.m......had dinner reservations and plans for evening so freshened up and left our room. When we returned at 11:00 p.m......still no luggage.....called Bell Services and they said "Oh yes...we have it....we'll be right up....there's a slight problem". Well, a few minutes later I found out what the "slight problem" was. Some other guest had packed glass baby formula bottles in their luggage.....while on the ME truck those bottles broke and not only ruined their own luggage/belongings, but, other luggage next to/under/on top of. My bag was soaked and stained with smelly baby formula. Fortunately, I learned years ago ....since we usually travel during winter months (think sloppy, slushy, snowy tarmacs and luggage)
....to pack everything in plastic travel space bags inside my luggage.....so nothing in my bag was ruined, wet or stained at all.....only the bag itself....which was a total loss......even the next day after cleaning it and letting it dry....it still smelled disgusting and had stains. Disney did make good and replaced my bag later the same day....I discussed it with the front desk manager before we left for the day....she looked at the bag and when I got back to the room that evening there was a brand new bag waiting for me. So, since that experience we usually grab our own bags at MCO and take them to the ME bus ourselves.....granted.....same thing could happen onboard the plane or in the baggage area of the airport......but, I wouldn't be discovering it at 11:30 p.m. with the possibility of having only soaked, ruined clothing the next morning.
The possibility of this occuring never entered my mind and now I'm thinking of getting some plastic bags. Thanks for posting your experience.

Thanks so much for the reminder!!! I try to put a lot of my stuff in either individual plastic baggies or in one big trash bag. I have had my bag get wet, but so far, it has either been just rainwater or bottled water..nothing that had a lasting impact. But there is always the chance that another passenger is going to pack something breakable and your bag will be involved!!!

Every single thing that goes in my suitcase goes in a ziploc bag first. There are just too many people who ask "Can I bring a case of water in my checked luggage?" for me to ever be comfortable without them.

There's no excuse for knocking on the door with the privacy sign out. I would go to the front desk or bell services and complain, they need to look at their procedures.

You'd be surprised - I've had it happen more and more lately. Once while I was...ahem...busy...and a manager knocked and then immediately used a key to OPEN THE DOOR. The excuse? "Someone reported the smell of cigarette smoke and we're trying to determine where it's coming from." (This happened at the Hotel Intercontinental in Buckhead and a similar interruption from housekeeping happened at the Ritz-Carlton in Amelia Island but luckily I'd remembered to engage the lock, too.)

Another time, I was in bed with a killer migraine and had the DND sign out and housekeeping knocked and them immediately came in and WOKE ME UP RIGHT AFTER I'D FALLEN ASLEEP. This happened at the Riviera Resort in Palm Springs.

(yes, yes, I need to remember use both locks all the time...I know...)

I often leave the DND sign out when I don't want my room messed with and come back to find housekeeping has cleaned the room.

But I digress...
