We have a son (6) with multiple life threatening food allergies to milk, nuts, sesame and a few other things. We love cruising DCL because they are so careful and will even go get boxes for us to look at. But as many have noted DCL is getting so expensive.

Could anyone with serious food allergies let me know what their experience has been like on RCCL. In specific, how have they handled things? Do they have a dedicated allergy kitchen or section of the kitchen? I'd love to hear about people's experiences.

I can't speak from direct experience, but the family next to us on Freedom had three kids and at least three different sets of food issues. Each night they were brought menus and filled out order forms for each family member with different food needs. It looked to me like they took extra care of them.

all mainstream lines are comparable to Disney in their handling of issues.

Mrsjvb- this is just simply not accurate that all mainstream lines are comparable. As just one example, Norwegian has had many issues with assuring individuals that food was prepared safely and they ended up in a life threatening situation. They actually tell people that they can't handle serious food allergy issues now.

DCL is wonderful and I was just wondering if anyone had actually experienced how it works on RCI.

I did RCL with a woman with allergies. She had no problem getting her needs met. The wait staff even got a chef when she had questions they could not address

I sincerely hope you get the responses you seek.

My DW has dietary restrictions, but not serious food allergies. RCI handles typical dietary restrictions wonderfully, as does DCL, NCL, Princess, Celebrity, and HAL. I would venture to say that DCL handles it better than others.

May I suggest you contact RCI directly with your specific concerns? Their answer might differ depending on the specific ship (RCI has some 20 ships, and only some, if any, may have a dedicated allergy kitchen). If their response is not satisfactory, then stick with Disney. DCL excels in certain areas, and -- with only four ships -- accommodating specific dietary needs seems to be one of them.

RCCL handled my diary allergy abominably - we will never sail RCCL again. Disney and Carnival can handle my dairy allergy, but Mariner of the Seas could not on our December cruise three years ago. We contacted them and were assured they could accommodate me; then they did not. Take allergy safe food with you.

DD9 is allergic to eggs, tree nuts, peanuts, and shellfish. We travel with an epi-pen and Benadryl.
RCCL handled her allergies well on Navigator of the Seas in January 2012. We pre-ordered her dinner the night befors and were able to get any questions answered at the buffets.
DCL does an exceptional job with allergies but RCCL did not disappoint. You just have to be THOSE PEOPLE to make sure to keep your kids safe.
