I'm a little thread happy today, but has anyone ever watched Roseanne? Of course it's been cancelled for a decade but I bought the season 3 DVD last week and it's just so funny.

One of my fave lines:
Becky, arriving at Jackie's, who is about to get laid basically: "I can't take it anymore!"

Jackie: "Yes you can. Bye."

LOL, that cracks me up!

For those of you who have seen Roseanne, what are some of the funniest things about it for you? Of course the DIS isn't a TV shows forum but hey, I bet LOTS of people have seen it.

The last season, to me, didn't suck like most people said. It's just that it was really, REALLY different. It didn't feel like the same series. It wasn't nessecarily bad but it was a step in a different - apparently bad, as it was the last season - direction.

Also, was I the only one who got a little mad at the show's hairstylists? Becky, (the first actress who played her - Lecy Goranson), had this really beautiful long hair in season 3, then she chops it all off into a mushroom and shaves the rest. Okay, fine, one bad haircut. Then she comes in season 4 with a bob that grows out, and I started to think hey, well she's gonna have long hair again. Then it's short again in season 5, she leaves (Becky #2 always had long hair), and when she comes back in season 8, it's long, THEN SHE CUTS IT AGAIN! AAARRGH lol.

And Jackie, her hair made me mad too. She'd constantly let her hair grow for a long time, it would be long and pretty, and then she's cut it. Eventually, she cut it REALLY short, which kind of disgusted me.

Oddly, Roseanne's short hair didn't bug me that much. When she was heavier in the early seasons, the short hair kind of suited her. She lost weight and grew her hair out, and she looked fine.

Anyways, I know this was mostly a "hair" thread lol, but anyone else like Roseanne, have quips, or funny quotes?

I loved Roseanne and have so many good memories of watching the show. I couldn't tell you a specific episode that was my favorite. I didn't watch the last season of it, but is it true that Roseanne's husband died? I think I remember hearing they got seperated, but is him dying a rumor or true?

Well-

The last season is "fictional". Roseanne was writing a book. It's explained in the finale that the entire final season did not "really" happen.

In the 9th season, we are led to think Dan (her husband) cheated on her, but in reality, outside of the book, he died of his heart attack that we saw in the end of s.8.

I didn't watch roseanne when it was on regular tv. I have just been catching it on cable and renting the seasons. It's such a funny show I can't believe I missed it growing up!

I particularly like Becky and Jackie, they are funny. I love how Becky is a brat most of the time.

Roseanne: You're grounded...(insert more that I don't remember)

Becky: Oh is that so, Roseanne?

(The laugh track goes ooooh in that confrontational way)

I love her attitude, of course I'd be on the streets with that attitude towards my parents. But the show is very realistic. A lot of kids ask that way.

I hated it when she won the lottery and from that point forward, but I loved early Roseanne. When she was Roseanne Barr, before she was married to Tom Arnold. She got wacko after that, and so did her show.

But some of the early episodes are brilliant! I still watch it now and again on Nick at Night and if its one of those early shows, I am usually rolling with laughter by the end! :lmao:

As for their hair, I sorta liked their crappy hair. :lmao: It made them more believable as every day people.

Best seasons were Seasons 2-6, even 6 is a little sketchy. After the "real" Becky left, not long after, the show's writing went downhill, slowly.

You could sense the "ridiculous" nature of season 9 coming during season 7. Some of the episodes started to get kinda weird.

I also didn't like how Jackie goes from being a little weird but understandable, to a total nutcase near the end. She flips out about silly things involving her baby and just got too weird for me. I love her in the first several years, but then she just goes off the deep end and is too ridiculous to be funny.

I wasn't much of a fan of the last season, but I thought the finale was one of the most creative finales in TV.

I love this show - we watch it regularly in my house and the WDW episodes are just CLASSIC. "I read about this! This used to all be orange groves! But that's not one Mr. Walt Disney saw. He saw that lake. He saw that castle. He saw that ample parking with convenient shuttle service."

It's so funny how relevent all the topics and relationships still are. . .other than hair and clothes, the show hasn't really dated itself like some older shows.

Laurie Metcalf (Jackie) is a brilliant actress, imho. I wish she were in more things. Roseanne is a great show (albeit spotty). Some episodes were masterpieces and some were just stupid. Season 2 till they won the lottery are worth having on dvd.

I love that show. I can watch the reruns any time.

Yeah the lottery was a big mistake, but at least it turned out to be a book, which was a little redeeming.

The only good point of the 9th season was seeing Jackie (briefly) happy in her love life with the prince, of course he ended up being a cheater.

I agree. I enjoyed the earlier Roseanne shows the most. When she won the lottery and the after I didn't much enjoy. I too watch it on NAN, and it's laugh out loud comedy. Some of the very early shows when Roseanne and Jackie worked in the factory were so funny!

I watched it when it was on originally and I watched it on Nick@Nite when I was up in the middle of the night with DD1. I think I've seen every episode. Some of the funniest:

-When Becky "Cut the cheese" in class:rotfl2:
-Dan or Rosanned found pot in the basement and smoked it with Jackie:lmao:
-When DJ reached puberty and spent lots of time in the bathroom:blush:

The last season was so bad, I'd like to just forget it ever happened.

The crappy hair may have been realistic but I hate when Jackie would grow her hair out and chop it; and Becky did the same thing.

Not sure that I can post this, but it's just a video link. This is the 8th season opening of Roseanne. If you watch Jackie "growing", I think she looks terrible in the last shot with short hair.

Luckily, Becky looks fine. The first picture shows Lecy, the original; then the fake Becky; then real Becky again. Thankfully Becky had not chopped her hair for the 100th time yet. :)

I love Roseanne. One of my fave shows of all time. Every actor on it had great comedic timing. It still makes me laugh when I catch a rerun even if it's the 100th time I've seen it.

I LOVE this show. I grew up watching it, and have gotten all the dvds when they come out. Everytime I watch now, I try to find the corn reference for that episode.
There are so many great lines. One of my favorites is:
Darlene: No, I'm serious: I think we should get married.
David: Oh, I get it, now you're gonna tell me you're kidding.
Darlene: Nope. Now I'm gonna tell you I'm pregnant.

Also, there's a story behind the 1st Becky's (Alicia Goranson) first short haircut on the show. Goranson wanted to cut her hair in real-life, but the producers and everyone said no, she couldn't. So she went to Roseanne and told her what was going on and Roseanne cut it off for her right there and then. After that, I have no idea what was going on with everyone's hair, but you're right, there was some BAD styling happening on set.

I was one of the people who felt "betrayed" by the finale. Until I saw it a second time. It was a great way for Roseanne to take control of her show again and put her mark on. But now I've been trying to figure out- she says that mark ended up with darlene, becky with david, jackie was gay (not bev), and that dan died after the heart attack (so that must have been darlene and mark's wedding?). So the last season wasn't made up- almost everything from the first/second season is made up (when Rosie gets the writing room in the basement). There's more of an explination, so if anyone wants to hear the crazy theories I've found, let me know. Otherwise I've kinda monopolized the thread...

Well Roseanne obviously doesn't have a very good eye! That first Becky haircut was the worst. It looks like haircuts I used to get. Shaved with a short bit left on top. She looked hideous.

In the following years she just kept cutting it into a bob/pageboy thing, which was not as bad, but it still was kinda ugly. She looked the most mature in season 8, when she came back, with long hair. Of course, that long hair lasted 3 episodes.

I love this show and watch it on Nick at Night. I love how they made their life situation seem so much like most everyday folks. I loved watching Jackie interact with her mom esp when she told her she was pregnant. I think it started going downhill right before and after they won the lottery. I guess they start running out of story lines.
