Hi everyone,

I had my first root canal two weeks ago. The tooth was not infected, but the filling was sitting on the nerve so it was beyond sensitive to cold. I finally got it taken care of. It was a back upper molar.

The only issue I'm having now is its sensitive to pressure. I see my regular dentist Tuesday so I plan on asking her about it. (A specialist did the work). I have no issues having cold liquid over there now. I haven't really tried eating there since I have to get a crown.

I'm wondering if its just sensitive since there is no crown?

While the nerve in the tooth is removed during a root canal, the place where it connected to the main nerve in the skull is still there, and alive. Yes, it's not uncommon that pressure can be an issue following a root canal (believe me, I've had over 8 of them). As noted, if you've received the final crown, ask your dentist to confirm that it's not too high. But, if it's not, only time will take care of the tenderness.

RCT is major surgery. It takes a bit for things to settle down. About 90 days. Yet if it's brothering you, it's worth the money to get a 3D X-ray of the tooth. It's how I found out I had an infection underneath my twice treated RCT tooth. I was ineligible for apicoectomy and also an implant if the tooth was pulled due to the way my jaw nerve runs. Again, found out everything with the 3D X-ray of the offending tooth. Most insurances doesn't cover 3D X-rays, yet OOP was only $250. It was 100% worth it even though in the end I had to have the tooth pulled.

I had a root canal some years back and couldn’t make sense why that same tooth started bothering me about a year later. Turns out, I had an extra canal that wasn’t taken care of during the first procedure. That tooth has now had two root canals and two crowns. 🙄

Thanks. I know they filled three canals. I get my crown Tuesday so it’s not from that. I took an ibuprofen tonight. I usually cannot because of acid reflux but gave in. It’s more of an ache than pain

Could be worse. I had a tooth they drilled too close to the root wall and it cracked. After investing in a root canal + crown; I had the tooth pulled and an implant put in.

I never went back to the dentist that did the poor work on the root canal so everything was paid in full by me. 😒

That's good to know. I was told that my tooth should start to feel better a week or two after my root canal and was worried when it still bothered me. It took two or three months until it felt normal again.

Thanks. I always saw the same stuff that if after a week it means something went wrong so of course I freaked out a bit

Hello
May I asked how is your teeth now? I had similar issue like you, had crown prep, then developed severe pain, for root canal done. 2 weeks later still having aching dull pain. Pain worsen with chewing or biting on it. Will have appt for permanent crown soon

What I had was just a crown, not a root canal, but I thought I would throw this out there. I was super sensitive to the temporary crown. When I let the dentist know, she was able to get the permanent one a bit faster and get it on. I had no problems with the permanent one. No idea what it was that bothered me so much with the temporary.

The temporary crowns are thinner, meaning temperature changes are more evident. And they don't tolerate pressure as well as permanent crowns. Also, temporary crowns just don't fit well as they are not sized to your mouth like permanent ones are.

I’ve had 3 root canals and yes they are sensitive to pressure for a little while. It usually takes a couple months for everything to feel normal for me.
