Room upgrades at non-DVC WDW resorts

I seem to remember reading about a post of someone who got a room upgrade at the GF at check in because he was a DVC member. Does anyone know how or if this works? Do you have to be paying or can you use points for another resort & request a room upgrade at check in? We will be staying at the AK Lodge on Mon. & Tues. night in May and thought it would be worth a shot to ask. Any info. on how this works would be appreciated. THANKS!

the Polyn gave us a room upgrade to a lagoon view when we checked in - did not ask for it, but we were there early. we were using points.

The DVC rooms are ROH which boils down to best available. Usually you get a very nice room (but not a suite or concierge).

Poopie - We are booked on points at AKL for the first 4 days it's open. I was told that the room was a Savannah view. I'll post when I return.

We booked using points and they told us it would be a savannah or pool view. Since a very high percentage of the rooms have a savannah view, we're hopeful we'll get it. We will also be arriving around noon and will tell them that we will wait all day if necessary to get a savannah room. I'll post when we return with what kind of room we get. I'd love a deluxe savannah, if we were to get an upgrade, but I'll just be happy to be there.
