Room Service vs. Table Service

So, my fiancee and myself are heading out to DW in July, and trying to decide what we are going to do on our first night there. We're staying at AKL and are wondering if there would be any disadvantages to getting room service from Jiko as opposed to dining at the restaurant. And, although I can't imagine why, if we would need some sort of ADR-type thing even though we wouldn't be at the restaurant.

Thanks

You wouldn't need a reservation. The room service menu is posted on allears and is in your room. Of course, you will get charged the service fee and the automatic gratuity.

I might be more casual than you but if I were at the Animal Kingdom, my first night dinner in the room would be to go down to the Mara, get a pizza to go and then enjoy it on our balcony with drinks.

yeah, we had thought about doing Mara too, but we're kinda looking at the idea of trying to keep from eating things that we'd be around normally, at least for dinner times. Not to mention, my fiancee's a chef, and has a list much longer than we have meal times for places she wants to eat at while we're down there. Or the fact that since we first started dating she has now made me into a bit of a food snob. She makes fun of me whenever I eat Taco Bell. . .

I guess I was more wondering if the ambience in Jiko improves the food experience there that much or not. It seems simply themed, which I like, but I can't really tell if being there would be much different than eating in the room, or balcony.

We often get room service our first night, especially if we arrive during peak dinner time. If you're flying, you can never be sure you'd make an ADR. Too many delays in air travel these days! I really enjoy being pampered with a little room service and a great view from the room.

A suggestion would be to make a reservation and then when you get there, go by the restaurant and see if eating there would be something that you would like to experience. If not, cancel your reservation and order room service.

Actually, I just looked over the menu for room service, and for some reason I was under the impression that all of Jiko's menu was on the room service menu. Turns out I was wrong, I guess. So, that really kinda settles it for us.

Thanks for the help though.

Oh and, quick note, these boards have been a great help in our planning process. thanks for all the wonderful info.

Not sure if you guys are wine drinkers, or not. But AKL is famous for it's extensive wine list of South African wines. $$$$$!!!!! I found a nice domestic white wine at the gift shop, and purchased a cute Mickey wine glass to go with it - lots cheaper! LOL!

A glass of wine was just perfect on the balcony! So I'd say, go to Jiko for dinner (one of our absolute favorites!), then head to your room to have some wine!

As you found when you checked out the in-room dining menu online, there is no comparison b/w it and Jiko. GO TO JIKO!! Particularly if your gf is a chef, she will be very impressed! Also, the atmosphere and service are wonderful! Get out of your room and walk down to Jiko;)
Try one of the flatbreads, the cucumber, tomato and red onion salad w/ watermelon viaigrette, the incredible chicken entree or the short ribs and , if you enjoy it, WINE, WINE, WINE:thumbsup2
Enjoy!

Yeah, we're definitely excited about the wine, as well as the very impressive menu at Jiko.

I guess I should've clarified that the night I'm talking about would be the first night of our honeymoon. So, we're kinda planning on hanging out alone that night. Which means I'll just have to plan Jiko for another night.

thanks again.
