Room Only vs Pkg differences

DD, DGD, and I will be going to WDW in September. I'm unsure what type of reservation to make. If I reserve a room now, I read I can cancel for full refund up to 6 days before arrival BUT if I book a Pkg deal, I will lose $100 if I cancel. Why? What's the difference?

So...can I book a room now and just add MYW plus dining a week or two before we leave?

What are some of your strategies to minimize your loss in case of cancellation?

You can only adding dining to the packages. Also, you can cancel before 45 days w/out penalty.
