Room charging type question

I am going to Disney over the summer and have never used the room charge feature. If I use a credit card, does it just scan for what my available credit is or what? Is there a minimum amount that needs to be on there, or a maximum they'll give you? Just curious!

we just got back from the poly, you just need to have available credit so you can sign off on room service, if you want to charge to your room from the gift shops, etc. have fun!

You have a certain limit at the resorts for room charges. Value = 500, Moderate = 1000, Deluxe = 1500. You place a CC down on your file and you are set for charging.

When you get close to the above amounts, the resort will bill your cc for the amount posted to your room and you start back at zero.

Have fun!

Disney gets an authorization for a set amount on your credit card. It is different at each level of resort. For example, at a value resort the credit limit might be $500, but at a moderate $1000. (Not sure the exact amts, but do know they vary as I have been to both Pop and CBR and had different amts and this was the explanation the CM gave us.) Each time you charge the limit amt, then disney actually charges your credit card for that amt. They will then authorize the amt again to allow you to continue charging. You won't be able to charge more than the amt of credit you have on your card. HTH

Wow, I didn't know that! :) I always thought they swiped the card at check-in for a certain amount to authorize. So you guys are saying they only swipe the card to see if it's valid and they don't type in an amount?

They swipe the card at check in for a specific amount, depending on the level of your resort. This puts a hold on this amount but does not actully bill you yet. To bill you they need to finish processing in a specific number of days [not syre how many days that is]. During this period the amount they put on hold will not show as available credit on your card.

That's not correct. I have used my debit card to secure my charging privledges and it has not affected my available balance.

Actually, it is correct. Debit cards work differently than a credit card. Most of them are changing however and when used it will show a difference between the posted balance and the available balance. Also, many debit cards are either tied to a line of credit or a savings acct. There is a hold on the specific amt regardless of debit or credit. The bad thing is that if you use a debit card and go over the amt that you have in your acct you will have some hefty overdraft charges, whereas with a credit card it will either not let you go over the amt available or it will grant you credit for a certain amt over the limit and charge you a set fee.

So how much do they take off your debit card at a deluxe resort at check-in?

It would be interesting to know this! I don't ever use my check card for incidentals when I travel, just in case I end up needing cash for something (no, it's never happened but paranoia runs deep in my genes!)

If I need cash, my check card gives me immediate access without interest, whereas if you need a cash advance on a credit card, you are charged a fee PLUS interest from the moment it touches your hand. Much cheaper to charge goodies which you can pay off interest free and reserve the cash. I generally have a zero-tolerance policy on interest, save for the mortgage!

You can always have them use your credit card to secure charges, then go to the desk and pay for what you've charged so far with your debit card, if you like. Personally, I would simply have them put it on my card and pay it when we get home so I can earn whatever miles or points I'm collecting at the time.

:moped:

We always use our debit card... but since they hold the funds I'd like to know how much they are holding! Anyone know???

I can remember when it was a $3000 limit to your room charges. And when did value resort limits change the last time I stayed at a value resort my limit was $1500. But from my experience on room charging they don't actually do anything to your credit card or debit card at the time of check- in except for getting authorization that the card is valid and that there is avalible credit on it. And NO they see how much is on it. I know that we had a problem w/ one of our credit cards one time when we checked in and I had to put my debit card down at check-in until I got it straighted out. Now I only had about $500 in my account and charged just over $1200 to my room account which on the day of depature they charged to my debit card. Mind you when I got home I needed to make a deposit. I love this feature my DH doesn't like to carry a lot of cash w/ us when traveling so I charge everything to the room when I can and pay cash when needed. I hope this helps a little bit!

Are you allowed to put cash or Travellers Checks down instead of a credit/debit card?

Yup, you can put down any form of money that you like.

i also want to know this edit: I just saw the answer is yes. But is there a set amount you must put down in cash or travelers checks at the value resorts?

That's good to know!!! Got rid of all our credit cards and don't want them back at all!!! Would rather keep the debit card for gas for the trip down and back or for anything else we might buy before getting to Disney or after.

When you put the money down at check in, does the CM give you a receipt to prove how much you gave them? What if you don't use all the money that you put down to charge to your room. When you check out will the CM check that and refund any money that is left or do you have to remind them?

I just read on another thread that someone called Disney and they said no, you cannot put down cash as a "deposit" for charging to your room. Has anyone been there recently that knows if you can or cannot use cash for this?

I just called Pop Century and you can put down cash or traveller's checks to activate the room charging feature on your key.

In December we put down cash and it was fine. I also do not like credit cards now that we have got out from under our college card debt. :flower:
Question if you use the internet service like at CSR can you also use cash or does it have to be charged?

We used the internet service at CSR in March. You actually go to the website for the company who provides the wifi, then enter a credit card number to proceed to any other website. Disney isn't involved at all, other than to give you the brochure with the web address.

Don't know how it works if you use their computers to access the internet in their business center - you may be able to pay them directly for that.
