In that case Disney wouldn't just Bank them for you especially if you had an emergency and and you couldn't travel if that was the case
Probably not. They sometimes will make a one time only exception, but usually you’d be out of look as those are the use year rules you agreed to.

They have made exceptions in rare cases but they don’t have to and no one should ever expect them to do that.

The rules are what help keep the system in balance. If they didn’t keep them this way, they’d have to amend. Like they did when borrowing was reduced to 50% when the closure happened in 2020.

Very true rules are good and maintain the balance for everyone. So Disney has the option to change rules of borrowing and lending.

That was the case with my friend and he was able to provide documentation.
Documentation of what?

You can do what you want, but I believe you would be setting yourself up for loss to buy a use year that doesn’t fit with your typical travel times and then expect an exception to be made if you need to cancel and can’t use your points before they expire.

Totally agree but with the ability to borrow and bank points it seems not that much of an issue at least for me. I don't know about you but things happen especially when you have kids if an emergency pops up and I mean an emergency you can't travel because someone lands in the hospital sometimes companies make accommodations for such events

That’s fine and all if an emergency pops up and you can’t make it on your trip, fine. Buying the correct use year for your travel does provide you that free extra insurance on your trips though instead of having to run to Disney and beg for your points back which is definitely not a guarantee whatsoever. Disney is not your friend here. They may do it once but I wouldn't count on it being a regular thing where they give you points back out of the kindness of their heart.

Every single DVC owner may have an emergency at some point during their ownership (kids, parents, accidents, hospitals, weather delays, cancelled flights etc)... Banking on the idea that DVC will accomodate requests for "emergencies" (yours or mine if needed) is buying a whole lotta heartache & disappointment.

And if it IS a real emergency, the last thing anyone needs is a stressful "discussion" begging a company maybe over a period of days to help them recover thousands of dollars in points their contract says they forfeited.

Magic could happen. But don't bank on it. It's a BUSINESS first. And Mickey & Minnie retired long ago.

I guess I'm spoiled they've always been good to me in the past in other ways. Customer service has always been great and they've always made up for things that didn't go right if it was on them. But you are correct it is a business and the fault is not theirs.

Heck, YES! CM pixie dust on the ground is great when it happens. I LOVE DVC but it's a different animal. And often their hands are tied. It's Buyer Beware as with every real estate transaction.

Wishing you well on this great adventure.....:tinker:

The big difference is that when you become an owner, you are not dealing with Disney anymore as their customer when using your points.

You are a timeshare owner who, along with other owners, are responsible for making sure the system can function. And we have hired DVC to do that.

They have a responsibility to the owners to manage the system effectively.

Yes, they get to set rules etc but with the notion that they monitor banking and borrowing so that things balance against supply and demand.

This mindshift is really something one must be aware of when moving from a Disney cash guest to a DVC owner.

It’s really not up to DVC to make too many exceptions because they have a responsibility to the owners to manage the system effectively.

Yes, they get to set rules etc but we pay them to do that for us.

That is one change that one must accept when moving from a Disney cash guest to a DVC owner.
Yes I totally understand what you mean it's different than staying and paying for a night. They're more rules involved o
f course the rules are in place so that
everyone gets treated fairly. But remember every situation is unique.

Not necessarily. They would advise that you should have taken travel insurance. A number of years ago (when you had to call MS to bank) I completely forgot. I called the day after my banking deadline and the CM had to obtain special approval to bank. It was my entire UY points.

So you can buy travel insurance fromdvc?

For $99… what are you expecting? There is such a thing as moral hazard and the insured has to have some skin in the game to make the insurance market viable.
We tend to self-insure so I’ve never looked into the pricing. If it’s far cheaper than full insurance to rebook later, it could be a very good deal. Just as an example: $99 for a week in a 2bedroom is great, $99 for 2 nights in a studio is steep.
