Robotics Type Gift Suggestion help!

My 15 DS grew up with lot of legos and absolutely loves robotics, wiring and basically anything that involves building. The Lego Mindstorm is out of my budget this year for Christmas, so I am looking for any recommendations for an alternative.

Last year, we gave him a small (20.00) kit for him to soder his own little robot. He LOVED it. I would like to build upon that this year, but I have absolutely NO idea where to start other than reading reviews on Amazon to get ideas. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I would suggest checking eBay or consignment shops for the actual Lego Mindstorm set at a reduced price. I must have gotten a good deal when I bought ours. Also, if there is a FIRST Robotics team at his school or in your area, he would love getting involved with that if possible, or at least attending the competitions if any are held near you. DS was lucky enough that there was a team at his high school. There is a Lego Robotics team for younger kids at the local Boys and Girls Club.
