RIP Matthew Perry

The poor guy had a lot of demons. I watched that interview he did last year (CNN maybe) and thought it was a miracle he was still alive. I hope he is finally at peace.

I'm surprised people are shocked by this. It is a terrible thing but I'm certainly not shocked given his previous lifestyle.

I’m not shocked, just saddened. I told my DIL, I never expected him to have a long life. I hoped that he would have a bit longer after conquering his demons. After all, there are quite a few rockers a lot older than Matthew Perry that lived thru drugs & alcohol problems too, and they’re still out there on stage. Hearing he’s gone makes me sad for all he went thru & the talent we’ve lost.

I read his book and it was one of the best depictions of living with addiction I have ever read. He almost died several times, including when his colon exploded a few years ago due to overuse of painkillers. He was in a coma and was not expected to survive at the time but he did. I was really pulling for him. He had been helping other addicts get sober.

Woke up to hear this sad news this morning on TV. So sad and young. RIP.

I never watched Friends, but I remember him guest starring on many TV shows before that. It's a real shame that he was trying to get himself together and is now gone. RIP.

Probably semantics and the definition of the word "shocked" what can differ per person as it is an emotion.

Even when you can "foresee" that a person with his background will die earlier than most people, then it can still be unexpecting and shocking or surprising when it actually happened.

I had it with my father, it was no surprise when I got the call, but it was still shocking when it actually happened.

I am more surprised that there are people who have never seen friends.

But then again... some have a good reason like Miriam Margoyles

And for those, the entire episode was a good one.

He definitely had his demons.

Deep down I think most of his fans knew it was a possibility, although it’s still shocking when it actually happens. It’s an initial shock, not a prolonged shock.

To me, this is similar to Whitney Houston. When you first heard the news you have that shock, but that shock is subsided by knowing the persons history.

Hope that makes sense.

Yes, exactly. And  about you father.

This one hurts a lot. Friends was appointment TV for me in my 20s - watching the group growing into adulthood at the same time as me with the warmth and humor that were integral to the show was so comforting and still is to this day. I've seen the episodes so many times and will continue to watch, but there will always be some sadness from here on out. I watched and enjoyed some of his later shows as well. After reading Matthew Perry's book, I had hoped he'd found some peace and would get to continue in his career without the battles that defined his time on Friends. I'm devastated for him that it didn't happen. I can't imagine how his castmates and family are feeling. RIP Matthew. I hope you know how many lives you touched and how much you'll be missed.

This one hit hard. I don't know why, other than we are similar in age and way too young to die.

Yes - I also read it last year - powerful, riveting - warts and all, he truly shared his challenges with the world. I was amazed at what he had been through - all while giving Emmy award winning performances on the series and in movies.

I really was rooting for him - he invested millions of his own dollars and thousands of his personal hours to help others avoid or kick addictions. Yet seemed so lonely and unable to find love or a stable relationship in his life.

He was my favorite Friend on that show. :(

Robin, John Candy, Jimmy B, Matt plus so many others- all the talented folks that comforted me during stressful times or made me laugh are gone too soon.
