My husband and I are both senior citizens and want to experience all we can. However, I know that some of the rides(like coasters that go up and down at a fast speed) would not be somthing that we could handle. We do want to experience the ones that we could handle though. Any suggestons from those of you that know the parks well? :confused3

Can you give us an idea of rides you've been on which you think you could/couldn't handle"?

This is our first time to WDW. I was there in 1982 and I think I went on some kind of runaway train. Husband has never been there, but I definitely know that neither of us can handle a roller coaster like ride. I thought maybe there were some "rides" that were not "terror" type. Sorry for being so confusing. :worship:

dbanzai - I know this is off topic - where was that pic taken?? Was it recently?? I love it!!

As for rides - I would get a Disney World Book - like the Passporter or Fodor's and read up on the rides. Because it depends on if either of you have heart conditions etc. Then you could probably ask the same question but have what rides you want to question.

My parents love Soarin'. They would never ride a thrill ride. Soarin' does make you feel like you're hang gliding, so you may want to read up on that one. There are lots of shows and attractions that aren't intense. Don't visit the Tower of Terror. The safari ride in AK is nice, Tough to Be a Bug, Flights of Wonder is a good show. In MK don't miss Mickey's Philharmagic.

At Magic Kingdom avoid Space Mtn and Big Thunder Mtn. I think you would like Splash Mtn. At Epcot avoid Mission Space and Test Track. I think you would like Soarin too. Disney Studios, avoid Test Track and Rock n Roller Coaster. Animal Kingdom avoid Dinosaur and Expedition Everest, Safari is a little jerky - hold on.

The runaway train is Big Thunder Railroad in the Magic Kingdom. It is not at all a bad ride. No ouside down or anything like that. Also, I would not avoid Test Track as someone posted. There is nothing in there that should bother you. The best part is when it goes outside and takes off. It's just fast, not at all scary.
There are a lot of attrations and rides at WDW that you will enjoy. Try going over to allearsnet.com for a ton of information on everything in WDW.

In Epcot Soarin and the Land and Mexico (both very tame boat rides) and Maelstrom in Norway and Ellen's Energy Adventure.
MGM The backstage Tour and the Great Movie Ride
AK - The Safari
MK - Small World, TTA, Peter Pan, Spalsh Mountain. I'm sure there are others. I'm not that fmailiar with MK.

DMom was about 80 when I thought that really the "show" at Splash Mountain was something she would enjoy. We showed her the drop, and she was game! She's glad she went, but wouldn't do it again, she's now 86, and loves Soarin!

She enjoys the ride at Norway, Mexico, the American Adventure and the movies along the WS. It's been awhile since she's done Spaceship Earth, we'll do it for Mother's Day! We did the Energy experience in December she enjoyed that.

Bobbi :)

The picture was at the Living Seas about a year ago.

Just to clarify something here, Soarin' is not a tame boat ride. It's an adventure, but it doesn't move much or violently. It's okay if you're not prone to simulated flight.

I think all coasters would be out then, along with Mission:SPACE, Test Track, Tower of Terror, Dinosaur, Star Tours... But that still leaves a lot. The MK I'd say has the most tame rides.

My Mom is 81, and even occasionally will ride Space Mountain. She loves Mission Space, Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain and Test Track. She will not do big high velocity drops, so no Tower of Terror or Rocking Roller Coaster. If you'd like a "milder" coaster that kind of roughs you up and throws you around but doesn't have big drops, you might try Primevil Whirl at Animal Kingdom...Mom likes that one, too, but a warning...it does make up for the lack of drops in the "roughness."

Soarin' is a very tame but fantastic ride that you should really enjoy, it is hang glider simulation. You'll also enjoy the boat based rides, like Pirates of the Caribbean, It's a Small World and Maelstrom (Norway pavilion) There are a LOT of rides older and tamer folks can enjoy.

I took my mom 79 this past January and she was game for everything except:
MK: the mountains (Space, Splash, Thunder), Stitch, Tea Cups
MGM: RNRC, TOT, Star Tours
Epcot: Mission Space. Test Track was closed but I don't think she would have done this either.
We didn't get to AK.

I actually just got off the phone with her; she was looking a the "memory book" I put together for her and she said "I want to go back!"

I asked her what her favorites were and she immediately said "Soarin'", but then added she loved all of the MK, the World Showcase Players at UK, the Mexican band, Spectromagic......she went on and on....

This was one of my best trips. WDW is truly a special place for all ages.

The safari in Animal Kingdom is great, but tell them that you do not want to sit in the back. We ended up in the back once and it was very bumpy- just something to keep in mind.

We're in our late 50's, and there are certain rides I don't do because I don't want to ruin my vacation being tossed about or sick. In the MK I don't do Space Mountain, kinda like Splash Mountain though. MGM, I don't do motion simulators, Star Wars, TOT, RRC. EPCOT, I have rode Test Track once, that was enough, no Soarin. AK I really like the Safari ride, Kali Rapids, haven't seen Everest but will not ride it. Have been on the Dinosaur exhibit and did not like it, too jarry. Most of the other exhibit rides are great, I feel I don't need the rush or beegeebers scared out of me and just enjoy the scenery of the tame attractions. Thats just me, my wife will ride anything.

Here is the lowdown on the WDW thrill rides:

MK

Big Thunder Mtn - Tamest of the WDW coasters (except Barnstormer, but that doesn't really even count as a coaster). Small sudden drops and lots of sideways forces. No big drops or upside-down manuevers. Avoid this only if you can't handle ANY roller coaster.

Space Mountain - Lots of sudden small drops and sharp turns that cause significant lateral forces. Also, it's in the dark, so it's hard to brace for the manuevers. If you have back problems, you'll want to avoid this. It doesn't go upside-down or have major drops (no WDW coaster I have ridden has major drops - I haven't ridden EE yet, so it might - I don't know).

Splash Mountain - Three flume drops. The last one is major at about 50 feet, but it's really the only hair-raising part of the ride. The rest of the ride is so good that I would advise everyone to gather their courage and ride this. :thumbsup2 You may get a little wet, but it's usually no big deal.

Epcot

Soarin' - I haven't ridden it yet, but the word is that guests of all ages love this. I understand that there are no extreme forces at all, just an incredible illusion of flying.

Test Track - The first part of the ride is bumpy in places and has some fairly strong lateral forces. If you have back trouble, you may want to avoid it. The final part of the ride - high speed "testing" - is smooth as silk.

Mission Space - If you can handle spinning motions, the launch sequence on this ride is INCREDIBLE! The only real problem is if you can't handle the spinning. Most people have no problem if they focus straight ahead, but you'll have to judge for yourself. This is a unique and very exciting ride, and if you can physically handle it, I would advise trying it. (NOTE: you won't feel like you're spinning while you're riding it if you keep looking at your screen.)

D-MGM

There are SERIOUS thrill rides here. These two are in a league of their own at WDW!

Rock 'n Roller Coaster - This is the best coaster at WDW. You will want to stay completely away from it. It launches you from 0 to 60 in 3 seconds and flips you upside-down 3 times (2 in the first 10 seconds!) I love it; you probably won't! (NOTE: it doesn't have any drops.)

Tower of Terror - This ride is actually very gentle in its motion, but it does "drop" straight down 30 or 40 feet, and more than once per ride. (It actually is pushed down, so it's faster than freefall!) If you think you can gather the courage to challenge the drops and can physically handle them, the rest of the ride is truly an amazing display of Disney magic!

Star Tours - This ride tosses you about. I have motion sickness issues with it (mild nausea, but nothing more) because of the up and down motions used, but you may like it fine.

AK

Expedition Everest - I haven't ridden it, but I understand that it is a high-thrill coaster. It doesn't go upside-down, but it's fast! Others may want to fill in, but I'm guessing it's on your "no" list.

Primeval Whirl - This ride is not nearly as benign as it looks. The lateral forces, especially during the spinning parts, are quite intense. The sudden drops are small but have impact.

Dinosaur - The ride is rough, but the primary thrills come from the sights rather than the ride itself. I think you'll like it if you don't have severe back problems.

---------------------

Just to fill in, my dw :earsgirl: is 42, but has serious back trouble from arthritis. (In fact, she needs to use an ECV to go to the parks.) She is able to ride every ride at WDW except Space Mountain, which she finds to be too hard on her back. She has not ridden Soarin' or Expedition Everest yet, and she finds the final flume drop on Splash Mountain a bit too intense for her taste. She is not a roller coaster jockey like me, yet she loves RnRC!

Naturally, you should follow all warnings provided at each ride and use your own judgment regarding your health and your ability to ride based on them.

Tim, who hopes that you press your courage a little bit (if that's all that's holding you back). Adventure is part of what a trip to WDW is all about! :goodvibes (Remember, for persons in good health, thrill rides and coasters only feel dangerous!)

I've ridden Soarin' multiple times in California and it is very gentle. There is a slight simulated motion. I ride all thrill rides, but have trouble with motion simulators like Star Tours (slight nausea). Soarin is not like Star Tours. It feels much more open. You almost never hear of people having trouble with the motion on Soarin.

I also am not very excited about heights. But again Soarin does not bother me here. Soarin does not have any actual heights (well maybe 20-30 feet - but you are buckled in), only some simulated heights. A very few people have trouble with these simulated heights.

Soarin is one of my all time favorite rides. It is extremely unique and shows Disney imagineering at its best, IMO. Everyone must try this ride. Chances are very good you will be fine with it and will want to ride it again and again.

It is really more a matter of your preferences than of your age. Unless you are more frail than normal or have a heart condition, there are very few rides at Disney that would be too much for a healthy senior. The only one that I might put in that category is Rock'n'Roller Coaster; avoid it unless you're looking for an intense thrill ride. (I love it!)

You might want to put off Space Mountain and Expedition Everest until you've experienced some of the milder rides such as Big Thunder Mountain. Mission Space is not a matter of age but just of susceptibility to a certain kind of motion sickness. Other than those, it's really just your choice!

If you do have some identified condition (or even if you don't) you might be interested in "PassPorter's Walt Disney World for Your Special Needs" (see link at www.allearsnet.com).

As for me, I'm not there yet (54), but I plan to be riding everything well into my senior years!

My in-laws went with us for the last two years. This is what they did ride/do. They are NOT thrill seekers:

MK: Pirates of the Carribean. This does have a VERY small drop. My FIL doesn't like drops of ANY kind, but did this ride at least twice on the past trip.
Its a Small World, Jungle Cruise, Liberty Riverboat (might be closed during your trip), Hall of Presidents, Philharmagic, Buzz Lightyear (even though it says "spin", it doesn't really spin)...we even took DS1 on it. Haunted Mansion, they love it. WDW train. Winnie the Pooh, Peter Pan, Snow Whites Scarey Adventure

AK: Kilamanjaro Safaris (they had no problems with the bumpiness), the train ride to Rafiki's, Its a Bug's Life, Festival of the Lion King

MGM: Who Wants to be a Millionaire (MIL LOVES this show), Great Movie Ride, Indiana Jones Show, Backlot Tour, Disney Animation Tour, Fantasmic!, Little Mermaid Show, Lights, Camera, Action Stunt Show (MIL and I DID not like being at the top of the stadium!!)

Epcot: Ellens Energy Ride, Journey Into Imagination, Living with the Land, Living Seas, American Adventure, Maelstrom (MIL only, we weren't sure of the drop on this one...but it wasn't bad at all), El Rio in Mexico. They would not do Soarin', HOWEVER, they really regret this now, and they are planning on doing it next trip in the fall. Soarin' is a very smooth relaxing ride.

I probably forgot a couple...but hope this helps!

Oh, you should try some character meals, in-laws LOVED them...Chef Mickeys, Crystal Palace and Donalds Breakfastasaurus were fun. Next time we will try Spirit of Aloha Show!!

Have fun!!
