Let me know what you think about it.

Will, you did a great report on this weeks show, it brought back my entire experience listening to you talk about RPDE. I wish Pete, Kevin and John went with you, I think they would have a different image of the whole day seeing all that is involved with this. Here is my report on the ride along in April.

For Xmas this year my family got me the Richard Petty Ride Along Experience. As Will said 'It was awesome!'

I entered the building, gave them my gift card and drivers license, had to sign the 3 page waver. They gave me a USB flash drive and ticket, picked out my driving suit and out I went to pit road. I checked in there, filled out a computer screen with my name and address and information that was transfered to the flash drive. This is used for the video of your ride.

When it was my time I was fitted with a helmet and a HANS device, so your neck does not flop around in case of an accident. Over the pit wall to the car, it is one of the new Cars of Tomorrow/Today style. They took some pictures of me, I slid into the passenger seat through the window, one of the crew got me all strapped in and told me some safety information. Going in through the window is pretty easy, I do not see any problem for a large size person. The driver asked me where I was from, got me all pumped up and started the engine. The car does have a LOT of power. We did 3 laps around the WDW track, it has 3 corners but I was surprised by the far corner, it is almost a double corner coming down over the hill. We were in the 120 MPH range during the ride. It went by fast, I would have loved to ride for another 10 laps or so.

I went by myself, my wife was not feeling well and stayed at the CBR. THere was one more person after me, and when he was done the pit crew guy took some pictures of me with my camera, a very nice touch.

I did purchase the DVD of my ride, it was $29.99 for the ride along. It shows 2 views, one of me and the driver in the car and one pointed out the front window. It only took a week to arrive. I was surprised to watch the video and see how when you go into the corners your head is pushed to the side of the seat, I did not notice that during the ride. It is great to pop in and watch every so often. I would do this again in a heart beat, and would tell anyone they should do it and experience it once. I would like to drive myself in the future just to get the true feeling of driving a stock car.

I know Pete kept talking about the price but when you look at everything that is involved, the car, racing engines, tires that are $250 each, gas, plus insurance which must be HUGE (imagine going to an insurance company and telling them we will be putting people in a stock car who have never driven a stock car on a race track and let them drive it by themselves at 120+ MPH, it is going to cost them some big bucks!) it is not cheap to operate this type of business. I agree the pictures and plaques are high but if you are willing to pay $400+ for this experience, you want to remember it forever.

Below are a couple pictures from my ride along, hope you like them.

Thanks for the ride along report wdwowner.

What Pete and company do not understand is RPDE is like a spa for the NASCAR geek. Very refreshing. :thumbsup2

Thanks! Great report. I have thought about getting this for my DH. He is not a youngin' like Will so it is nice to hear your view of the experence.

I've done it and really enjoyed it. The price is actually a bargain if you ask me.

And yes, even if you're a big guy, there's no problem with the suits or getting in and out of the car.

georgemo, you are correct. How much would Pete pay for a spa treatment? To some the price of a spa treatment is crazy, but they think it is worth it. Fans of racing know this is a good deal but other cannot imagine paying that much for driving a car in circles.

Perspective is everything!;)

Will, excellent job with your first "report"! I think you captured the feeling/energy perfectly from the perspective of a driver. :thumbsup2

I surprised DH with the Rookie Experience at Christmas 2007.

Phoning into RPDE, I don't think calls go to a massive contact center - the staff seem too friendly and knowledgeable to be in that kind of atmosphere. I called twice and both times the ladies who answered my questions, and subsequently took my booking were wonderful.

Note of caution: if you are at WDW for a few days, plan your RPDE earlier in your stay as there are no refunds for rain-outs. I was told it doesn't have to be very wet out for them to close it down. If it's raining to call them and they will tell you whether or not it's a go. She said often times by the time they are ready to go on the track, the showers have passed. The morning session before DH's was pushed later due to morning rain. If it is cancelled, they will re-book or give you a certificate valid for 1 year and at any of the tracks. No refunds. Of course this was a concern for me since we don't live near a NASCAR track - oh well, I thought if worse comes to worse, we'd have to take a trip to Vegas to use it up...LOL!

DH doesn't follow NASCAR at all (blasphemy, I know :rotfl2: ) but he has always enjoyed driving, and played a lot of GT 1/2/3/4 on his Playstations :lmao: He LOVED his RPDE! You sounded just like him when he was done (his speed topped at 122 too). This was the highlight of his trip. :goodvibes

I was happy to hear that Pete caught on to the nickel & dime thing as well - it's how I felt. C'mon you just charged me $400!! Can't you throw in a couple of bottles of water for the family that sit around and bake er, I mean... cheer the drivers on?:wave2: I bet a lot of the rides are initiated by family as gifts, anyways.

Plus, it felt like the first 20 mins of the classroom time was spent hawking more items: video, photo plaque, heavy push for the discounted ride alongs. They succeeded scaring DH into thinking he'd be behind if he didn't get it so he said he thought he should do that first, so out I went to pay for it. More $$. Then at some point DH had to go inside to get his hand stamped.

Overall, for the driver I think it is an amazing experience. However, while it is on Disney's site, it definitely does not have the Disney magical touches...here's my moan and groan :rolleyes1:

There is a RPDE shuttle pickup service from the TTC area, right by the Kennel. It is supposed to (insert ominous music here) run every 15-20 mins. I called twice before I booked to find out EXACTLY how to get to the track. I was told the shuttle runs on a regular service...just wait there. I told them we would be coming from the parks and required this service so could it be noted that people would be waiting for the shuttle? I was told, "oh, not necessary." So of course you know what happens...

Yes, I'm OCD...I'm on these boards aren't I? :rotfl: So I go into the Kennel bldg and ask the staff at the Land of Forgotten Stuff (IIRC, it's the desk to the right) if the RPDE shuttle arrives regularly, etc. It's not their schickt so they're positive but non-committal. No worries, I'm in Magic World and so far something unexpected and wonderfully magical has happend to us on every day of our trip.

So I look at my watch, then laugh, talk, plan some more of our trip, look at watch again, talk about rides, dole whips, re-arrange some of our days, check my watch - on this goes for 30 minutes so I head back into the bldg and kindly ask if they could help me by calling RPDE and let them know someone's waiting. The merrily oblige and 15+ minutes later the van shows up. No apologies - seems like they just didn't make the trip. :sad2:

When I arrive, DH goes to take care of some bizness and I go register him. There is a "Driver Check-in" sign at the back of the store and a "Register Here" sign at the front cashier. So I tell a passing employee what we're doing there, and ask where should we go. Tells me to go to Register Here counter. So I queue behind folks who are buying water and assorted yummy snacks, some of them who can't quite decide exactly which tasty treat they want by the time the cashier is ready to ring them in. So 5 minutes later, I finally get to the cashier who tells me, "Oh no, you got to go to the back."

We weren't late but were the last ones seated in a sold out session and they got started right away. None of these are big issues, however, it definitely accentuated how Disney really excels at process and logistics. So Will's suggestion to get there 30 minutes early is excellent advice! I think that's if you're driving yourself there. If you're taking the shuttle, well...

So overall, driving is why one does the RPDE so the driver experience is paramount and they seem to do a good job with it. I only add this so others who are considering going, don't expect a Disney experience - like having paper towels stocked in the Ladies Room (no handblowers either).

cheers,
:flower3:

They only do that to make the racetrack experience more authentic!:lmao:
