I don't use marshmallows when I make mine I use Fluff. I have made them for a bunch of Animal shelter bake sales and people always want the recipe? I don't even really like rice krispie treats, but my husband loves them!
I've found that marshmallow treats don't get cool. They are eaten immediately after spreading them out. They can also be eaten directly from the melting/mixing pot.
Interestingly, I heard the other day that some people cut the treat into small squares after spreading it out. They then only eat one or two squares at a time. Nutjobs.

Awhile back I had read that if you overheated the marshmallows, they will cool as hard as a rock..since then I have been very careful when melting the marshmallows..take off the heat before they are all completely melted and kept stirring until they are all melted..then proceed..have not had a hard batch of treats since.
I also found that store-brand marshmallows have the tendency to get very hard after they cool down. Don't know why, but that was my experience.
I use a bag of Kraft marshmallows, 6 cups of rice krispys, and a whole stick of REAL butter, and they come out perfect every time.
