With the new Magic Bands RFID
Do you think Disney is going to go cashless. As on the cruise ships.
you link your credit, debit, cash card to your account and everything you buy get taken off your account.
Disney won't not have to deal with that "nasty money". Having to set up banks, collecting money during the day, counting money ect.
:coffee:

Longterm? Absolutely...

Short term? No.

They get enough outside/local traffic...especially to resorts and downtown...that would make cashless impossible right now.

I'm sure that's a longterm goal.

I don't think it's going to happen any time soon. AFAIK, the new magic bands are just replacements to the KTTK cards, with some extra functionality. The KTTK cards have been out for quite some time, and they are still not cashless. Also it's RFID, not RFDI :) (stands for Radio Frequency Identification)

This also wouldn't work for people staying off property. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you don't get a KTTK card if you stay off property. You just get your park passes. These people would still need to carry cash (or credit cards) to pay for things in the park.

I agree - they probably want to go cashless, but that's not going to happen. I'm sure they will do promotions or something in order to encourage people to go cashless. Disney gets what Disney wants! :)

Definitely NO!

I find that about 1/4 of my ticket sales are cash, about 2/3 are credit/debit/stored value cards, and the remaining 1/12 are KTTW (Hotel charges) or vouchers. I had one day this month where I took in over $4,000 in cash.

but in person ticket transactions are such a smallish part of the equation in this day and age, no?

you tell me...from my trench time some years ago i know that advance purchase was GIGANTIC in their scheme of short, intermediate, and longterm goals.

and getting think bought up front is and was the foundation to alot of the other things that they are starting to pull out now and will continue to do so.

I would be surprised if there is more than a few percent of on property stayers that don't do advance purchase now...but i don't know how that translates to off property travelers and the local market. most that use travel agencies would be advance purchasers as well...plus passholders, conventioners, etc.

insight?

They're definitely going to try to go as cashless as possible, but let me say that I truly hope they don't password protect the magic bands as they do room cards.... having to enter a pin code every time I buy something has gotten real old real fast in recent trips.

I don't know why anybody would want to carry cash if they didn't have to. I'm a big proponent of using cash and use it for the vast majority of daily life but at amusement parks and stuff like that, it's just one more thing to mess with. The only things I take to the parks now are my phone and KTTW. I'm excited about the wrist bands since it'll be one less thing I can lose while I'm there.

Unfortunately I think they have to do this to "make a show" of it for transaction security purposes.

But...the future is in your genes...as in thumbprint or perhaps even DNA recognition systems.

The cellphone companies have been pouring money into this kinda thing -allegedly - apple is supposedly close.

It's possible that in the future all Disney systems will be securely linked to you down to the microscopic level...
Which would eliminate not only petty theft and fraud at the cash registers...but perhaps also eliminate the potential for any tickets to be resold and perhaps even the need to have a "check in" system at the hotels.

That sounds very close to the "destination Disney" concepts that were postulated about 20 years ago.

They thought that some kind of "scanner" could handle most of the CM tasks (resort checkins and services, park entry, even transportation)
...now it seems that world is close to having the technology to do those concepts even better.
