I recently bought a reversal adaptor for my D5100 to use with my kit lens since I rarely use it. When I first tried it I realized it's more like Micro instead of Macro. You have to be right on top of your subject and the DOF is sooo narrow. The only thing in focus is the center. Does anyone have experience with this? Am I doing something wrong? I thought it would be more like a regular macro lens.

No, you're not doing anything wrong. I've never bought an adapter to do it, I just used to freelens (I don't recommend freelensing unless you want to clean your sensor). It's fun to play with at first, but I quickly got bored with it.

I thought it was cool at first until I tried to think of what to shoot. What do you shoot with such a narrow field of focus? When I look on Flickr I see plenty of bug shots. I am not into crawling around looking for tiny insects.

with the 18-250 do you have to be right on your subject?
