Come sign the petition to bring back the Pirates that we all know and love, the ride we grew up with. It's going to take a LOT of signatures to have any hope of Disney listening to us so pass it on!
For some reason, I cannot get a link to properly post in this forum (despite it being almost identical to other forums I've just posted on).

I realize this is a long shot, guys, but there have been some pretty impressive victories from petitions on that site so we have to hold out hope!

I never saw the original but I am perfectly happy with the current version.

However, I wish you luck, just last week Bob Iger was talking about how "branded" attractions are much more successful and that will be the direction they take in the future. So, I highly doubt they would "unbrand" Pirates, especially with another movie coming out in the next year or so.

i'm fine with captain jack sparrow.
i do wish they would get rid of the mermaid though.
i'm glad that they at least put back in "dead men tell no tales" cuz they had taken it out when they first put the mermaid music in.

I've never seen any of the POTC movies, because as a Disney purist, I don't believe they should ever make movies based on theme park rides. I was very much against the changes to POTC back when they added the theme from those movies and the Depp audio animatronics. But once I rode the changed ride, I really enjoyed it. I still don't intend to watch any of the POTC movies, but I'm fine with these enhancements. What I didn't like was when Disney decided to go "p.c." and make the women chase the men in the chase scene. That was (and still is) ridiculous.

Branded and re-branded attractions have always been a part of Disneyland from opening day onward. The Jack Sparrow overlay is no different. It's actually in keeping with historical park standards.

I don't really mind the branding on Pirates (and believe me, I would jump at the chance to hate it!) I think the ride still has the feel of "Pirates" and the movie additions are less of the focus. I could do without the "face on the fog" thing though. It just doesn't match the rest of the ride.

On the other topic about Bob Igor saying branded rides doing better than non-branded rides... I don't really agree with Disney at all. What I think they are reacting to is the short lived "gimmick appeal" pay-off that is rather large at the beginning but tapers off and needs to be redone later (the effect is the same in every industry) and ignoring the long-term success with many things that aren't branded. Take Space Mountain, Matterhorn, Pirates, Haunted Mansion, BTMRR and Expedition Everest. All focused on an idea, imagination, and adventure, instead of some movie. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE me some Peter Pan, Dumbo, and other similar rides, but Disney seems to think the ONLY formula to success is to slap a movie brand on it. And knowing creative industries like this, once they start following a formula for profits, their properties lose all the heart. I've seen this trend in Disney on and off for years now, and I hope they find their way back to understanding just what makes us truly still love a ride after 60 years.

Matterhorn was inspired by the movie, Third Man on the Mountain.

LostGen --

I think that the reason you were not getting the link to appear is probably because it's a banned site on this board, or something that we're not allowed to link here. (Something along those lines.) You can always check with the webmasters/admins to be sure on that.

In the meantime, as I realize that you're new here and probably wouldn't have known what was allowed or not allowed, I removed the name of the site in your post and moved this thread over to the Disneyland Community forum. The main Disneyland forum is for Disneyland Resort-specific trip planning, whereas the DL Community forum is more for the general chat.

It's fine to discuss the changes -- good or bad -- to POTC over the years, but to be on the safe side I would drop the petition talk.

Thanks!:goodvibes

I won't be signing any petition to "restore" the ride, I like the new version. And yes, I've seen both.

I have also seen the old POTC (at a "soft" opening, many, many (!) years ago :yay: ). I do LOVE Captain Jack Sparrow, though!! (And I do miss the old chase scene!)
KEEP Captain Jack!!!

I grew up with the original Pirates, my first real Disneyland memory is from that ride making it my #1 favorite. Because of that and being a huge Johnny Depp fan, I saw the first movie on day one and was blown away with how they recreated some of the scenes. The ride and the movie are still to this day my favorites. Disneyland is ever evolving while still remaining the place my Dad remembers as a kid, the place I remember as kid and what my kids remember. The change happened almost nine years ago, suddenly demanding they change it back seems kind of silly at this point. Captain Jack *is* Pirates to my kids and I'm sure to most of their generation while still remaining my most beloved ride. Change has to happen and I think Disney does a decent job with that while still maintaining the magic.

I've never been a big POC fan, it's one of my least favorite rides, but I don't know why they would switch it back. Just wouldn't make sense. The overlay has been quite successful.

I'm the designer of the fireflies at Pirates of the Caribbean, and also the movie Pirates of the Caribbean. I am well aware that the fireflies are a mess right now at the Bayou. There are twelve that I know of, and they are not working right. I am going to get in touch with Disney Imagineering this Monday to discuss it, so they can do it right again.
