When reshopping a cruise onboard, Can anyone tell me if they cancel the original, refund you, and charge you again for the cruise? Or do they transfer your existing deposit to the new booking?

Just checking, because if they do a refund / new charge I need to take into account the amount I'll lose through foreign exchange fees when determining if it's worth it or not.

Thanks.

When I just did this I was told they have to refund the money and then recharge the deposit

In my experience, they have refunded old cruise and then made a new charge for rebooked cruise. Ive done this twice & it was the same both times.

If you used a travel agent for the original booking, you will need to have the TA cancel that for you. I've only done this once, but our TA was able to cancel the original cruise and then switch the room on the new re-shopped reservation to our original room.

If you have booked directly with DCL and selected a room then rebook on board, are they able to reselect it for you when they do the rebooking (and cancel the original booking)?

Yes, he changed the room for the original booking which I had to cancel myself (did it when I got home), this then frees up your room for your new booking.

We reshopped onboard, had to pay a new deposit and were told we had to cancel the original booking ourselves. So when we got home we phoned DCL (using free 0800 number) and asked for the original deposit to be put towards the new reservation rather than having it refunded. So glad we did this now with the dismal sterling/dollar exchange rate!

I reshopped last year. The cm wasn't very happy about it. He made me feel like I was doing something wrong. Since I wanted to keep my room it got a little dicey. My room category was then at Gty so no 5e rooms left. He said he would do his best to not lose it. He said if he cancelled the room would not be able to book since that category was now at the Gty rate. He made a phone call and was able to do some type of room hold and I was able to keep my room. I found it a little nerve wracking.

My experience with refunds is that if a foreign currency is refunded to my credit card (German credit card company), the the foreign exchange fee is refunded as well. It might be worth checking with your credit card company. The other question is of course exchange rate.

Thanks, all useful information!

Thanks everyone. Will need to check my credit card info re exchange rate fees. It's starting to sound like more hassle than it's worth, maybe I just book another placeholder instead
