Reservations made for next use year

This question has been bugging me for a while now. I have made rezzies at SSR for March (81 points) which leaves me with 169 points for this use year. I intended to bank these points.

I also intend to make rezzies for next October (Oct. 1-6) which is the beginning of my use year. When I do make these reservations in the next couple of days, do they take the points (65 if I figured correctly) from this year's points or next year's points? If I have already banked this year's points, will I have to borrow points from next year?

Or does it make any difference?

Let's see if I have this right. You have an October UY, right? Right now through the end of September, 2007 you will continue to be in your 2006 UY.

You have 169 points left in your 2006 UY.

You want to make a reservation in your 2007 UY (October 1-6) that will use 65 points. Do I have the facts correct?

If you do not bank your 2006 UY points, then the only points you will have available for your 2007 UY trip would be from your 2007 UY.

Now, I'm assuming you don't want to make any DVC trips before next October, right? What you want to do is bank your 169 points from your 2006 UY into 2007 UY. After that, make the reservation for October 1-6 and confirm with MS that they used your banked points.

When the smoke clears, you will have 104 banked points in your 2007 UY plus your annual allotment of points.

With an Oct Use Year:

Oct '06 points are valid for stays from Oct 1, '06 to Sep 30, '07
Oct '07 points are valid for stays from Oct 1, '07 to Sep 30, '08
Oct '08 points are valid for stays from Oct 1, '08 to Sep 30, '09
etc.

So your stay on Oct 1-6, '07 falls within your '07 Use Year. You can use any of the following points for that stay: banked '06 UY points, '07 UY points and/or borrowed '08 UY points.

If you will not be using your remaining 169 '06UY points for any other stays between now and Sep 30, '07, bank them into your '07UY. If you aren't sure whether you might use them for something else this UY, you could bank 65 of them into your '07UY to use for the Oct '07 trip and wait a while to bank the remaining 104 points (you have until Mar 31, '07 to bank up to 100% of your points). With banking, you don't have to bank all of the remaining points all at once so you could bank 65 now for your Oct '07 trip and hang on to the rest for a few more months if you are unsure about any travel plans in the next 9 months.

Just be aware that banking (and borrowing) are final transactions. Once you bank '06 points into your '07UY, they must be used for stays falling within your '07UY. The points will expire at the end of your '07UY (Sep 30, '08).

Also, when you call MS you need to bank the points first, then make the reservation so that the banked points are in the correct ('07) Use Year to be available for use for the reservation. You can also bank points online via the DVC member's website. But since this is the first time you are doing this, you might want to do the banking on the phone with MS just in case you have any questions.

If you are successful in switching from SSR to BCV or BWV, the point cost will go up, but that won't be a problem. If you still have some banked '06 points left in your '07 UY, MS will use those to cover the increase. You could also use '07 UY points and even borrowed '08 points (if between now and March you had committed the rest of your '06 and all your '07 points to some other trip).

October is a very popular time for BCV and BWV due to F&W so when you call in March to try to switch your reservation over to BCV or BWV, you should call day by day to maximize your chances of getting in, or at least getting pretty high up on the waiting list for any days that are not immediately available.
