Resale or buy direct from Disney? Which is better? Difference?

We were at Disney this past week and spoke with a DVC salesman. It's very enticing and we are considering buying the Grand Californian, which is $112 per point...they are of course offering incentives...full points for 2009 to bank for 2010 and about $3,100 off the buying price.

It seems to make more sense to purchase a resale, as the points are cheaper? Am I missing something?

I would question whether you could even find a GCV resale at this early stage in the game?

Not necessarily a GCV resale...we would buy a DW resale. We would buy GCV new.

Buying resale is definitely a better option if you want to save money, especially if the home resort at WDW is not important. You can get SSR for around $70.00 per point and the dues are 2nd lowest (behind BLT).

The process will take longer (4 - 6 weeks until you have your points) vs. a few days with Disney. And, with ROFR, if the contract you want gets bought back by Disney, it will prolong the process as you will have to start again.

However, if you are in no real rush, the I would definitely investigate that if you are considering purchasing a WDW resort along with VGC.

The #1 advice in my opinion is purchase where you want to stay because that 11 month window can be very very important.

I bought resale and the only problem I have is I want more points.

It's all about the math, I haven't found any special benefits by buying through Disney except for 1 time perks. What can you save $-wise through resale, verus the value of the perks Disney sales will offer? We used the timeshare store and it was very smooth btw.

I think the fact that VGC was the location you were interested when talking to the guide makes me think that resale might not be your best option as I dont think there are going to be many VGC contracts out there?

You need to look at the perks that disney is offering (extra 2009 points??, reduced fees? park passes??) and weigh that against buying where you REALLY want to stay. If where you REALLY want to stay is AKV, BLT, or VGC - then buying through Disney very well could make sense for you. If you want to stay at SSR, resale is likely a good option - just factor in closing costs as they are higher on resale than through disney. If you REALLY want to stay elsewhere and dont care about the 2040 end dates, resale would probably work too!

I think that depending on the perks you are getting AKV is probably a toss up between resale and disney right now?? but i havent crunched the numbers - and its probably dependent on how many points you are buying too!

Like others have said, it all depends on where you want to stay. We are new members, haven't even been "home" yet , but we bought at BLT because I really couldn't see us staying anywhere else over the long term. Sure, we want to try some of the other resorts, but for the long term I wanted BLT for the transportation (we never have a car) and the fact that MK is our favorite park. If you would be comfortable staying at SSR, OKW, BWV, etc. over the long term then by all means you should look into resale. But, do not buy somewhere with the hopes of getting in somewhere else at 7 months every time.

You have to do the math. Resale is usualy cheaper, but.......... Closing costs on resale add up to several extra dollars per point, plus you have to come up with your own financing (unless you are payong cash). DVC also closes the deal alot sooner, also I added on last week and was able to make a reservation the same day I told my guide "Ill take it!"

I am buying AKV now and I think you are correct that it is pretty close to “a toss up”

If you bye from Disney ask about getting the web cast deal. I don’t know what it was for Grand Californian but it saved me an extra $5 pt for $20 off of $112 making it $92 a pt. I am going to use a credit cart to get an extra 1% off to make it close to $91 pt. If you purchase from Disney you can breakup your contract points as well. This most likely only matters if you ever sale your DVC or want to give it to kids.

For those that maybe thinking it; I am not financing with a credit card. I am paying it off ASAP.

I have seen resales for as low as $50 per point, I think that is the way to go if you are looking to save money - the $50s are usually for Vero though and their dues are the most expensive I think.

We have done both. Resale will save you money but is risky lately. We just tried to add on another contract through resale and Disney snagged it using ROFR. It is frustrating to wait a month only to find out the deal is off. From what I read on these boards, Disney is buying up a lot lately. We were out $25 in Overnight Fed Ex fees, which is not much, but if they buy up 2 or 3 before you find one they let through it can add up.

We ended up buying direct from Disney and found the following advantages - paid with Disney Visa to get reward points, will wait to pay off balance for 6 months (0% APR for Disney vaca purchase) and earn interest on that money in our account, broke up contract into 2 smaller contracts in case we decide to sell off some points in the future, points are available to book immediately, same use year as other contracts, and got 2009 points but only paid a few dollars in maintenance fees for 2009. Big disadvantage was it cost us about $1000 more than the resale would have.

I see you live in NY, would you be going to VGC yearly, or trying to switch into WDW? If you go to California all the time, then it would make sense to buy there, but if Florida is wher you will be going more, than I would look into buying there, and you can still buy direct from disney.
