Has anyone requested a stateroom upgrade at the Terminal Check-In? For instance, we are in a Cat 8 and was wondering if available what would it cost to upgrade to a Cat 6? I am wondering if there are open staterooms would DCL do this at a nomimal fee?

DISCLAIMER: I haven't cruised yet, my info is just from these boards! ::yes::

They sure will upgrade you (if there are cabins available)...but the fee may not be as nominal as you'd like! ;) I've read on these boards that upgrading at the port costs just slightly less than if you had upgraded before your trip. If your heart is set on a Cat 6 you may be better off upgrading now instead of risking no cabins available when you get to the port.

A lot more people on these boards have been turned down trying to buy an upgrade at the port than those that have been sucessful.

??? Why would you be turned down? Other than there are no cabins available??

That does not make sense if the rooms are available?? The cost to maintain one room vs. another could not be any different unless iyou are upgrading from a stateroom to a suite. I think I will give the DCL a call to see what they have to say! Thanks for the input!

The only way you'd be turned down is if there wasn't a stateroom in available in the category you were requesting.

On our December 14-18 Wonder cruise last year we (2 adults) went from CAT11 to CAT8 for $252.

GOOD LUCK!

Yes, we got an upgrade from a cat 12 to a verandah room. I can't remember how much it cost, I think it was about $500 but it sure was worth it.

We asked at check in and they obliged.

Hope you get the room you want and happy sailing!!

I don't know the exact groupings but it is my understanding that DCL groups the cat. rooms and it is cheaper to move up in the same group than another group. For ex. when we cruised in Jan 03 we were in a cat. 6 cabin. We could have upgraded to a cat. 5 for very little (almost nothing I think) and to a cat. 4 for a small fee. We ended up upgrading to a cat. 3 for about $700 for a family of 4 on a 4 day. I believe this was a lot less than it would have been before the day of embarkment. I thought I remember the CM telling me the groupings contained similar cabins maybe somthing like 11-12, 8-10, 7-4??? but I don't remember exactly.

I think you got an EXCELLENT deal.

We upgraded last year from a cat. 9 to a cat. 5 for $300.00. We are a family of 4 and had a 2 year old at the time. I think it was a great deal for a 7 day cruise! This year we tried to do the same and there were no cabins available. In 2002 we also tried to upgrade, and there were no cabins available, so it is all a game of chance! Good luck!:D

SOrry, forgot you all weren't mind readers:smooth: I forgot to say that most sailings DCL says are full and therefor no upgrades to be purchased on sailing day.

jrabbit - I knew whence you were coming from. - Mike

We upgraded for our Eastern over the 4th of July last year from a cat 9 to a cat 4 for $800. It was worth it for us since I had let DD-12 bring a friend and was nervous about the cat 9 room.

We also upgrades at the port. We had two cat. 11 staterooms. I asked if one stateroom was available w/verandah not too far from the other stateroom and they did find one. Can't remember right now what cat. it was. We did this for close to $700. (There were three of us in this cabin).

I just got off the phone with DCL and for our OCT Western for a family of 4 to upgrade from a Cat 8 to a Cat 6 is $600.00 today. I don't think that is too bad?:boat:

We upgraded at the port from a Cat. 8 to a Cat. 5 for $298 on our four-day cruise in November. As I recall, that was about half of the difference it would have cost with an advance booking in a Cat. 5.
