Repositioning sailings

Considering the 4-day repo cruise from Vancouver to San Diego in Mar 2024 as a quick getaway but have a few questions:

At what capacity do these normally sail at?

Are *GT rates offered for these sailings (should I wait for a discount)?

If you’ve been on one before would you recommend it?

Is the movement worse than the San Diego - Cabo route or about the same?

I can't answer to the *GT rate because these pop up all the time. We have done the Vancouver to San Diego cruise before (in fact it was our very first cruise) but it was at the end of September and the weather was still very nice. Mid March....on a cruise ship leaving Vancouver ( I live here) will be......chilly....perhaps even downright COLD. Don't count on using the pool deck. Also the movement can be worse than down from SD to Cabo (another cruise we've done) for part of the cruise (the first part) as you are in open waters for a while with no land in site, it seemed to get calmer the closer we got to California.

It can depend on the cruise of a repositioning seals out or not. In general they do sell less quickly because airplane tickets with flying out to one city and back from another city can be a bit more expensive.

And, especially for Disney, do you sail during school breaks yes or no?

I have a preschooler so we avoid school breaks, but I have no idea when spring break is next year so if it lines up with the March sailing it’ll probably be a no-go

We did the cruise in May 2017, our cruise had a stop in San Fransisco which we really enjoyed. The weather was beautiful that day. The rest of the sailing was very cold, and we are Canadian. The pool deck was empty because it was so windy and cold. The rest of the ship was packed. There were tons of kids on the ship most under the age of 5. I did find the motion to be bad and threw up in Palo, I didn't make it bathroom. Needless to say, it was our least favourite cruise LOL!

We’re on that cruise and while the Pacific Coast repositioning cruises often do get discounted, this one is a bit harder to guess because it’s sailing at a very different time than we usually see it (due to needing to get the ship back to North American from Australia). Being in March it lines up with spring break for some people which might lead to it being busier. I still wouldn’t expect it to fill though.

Heading south out of Vancouver I would expect the seas to be rougher, calming down closer to Oregon/California. If pools or spending a lot of time up on the pool deck is your thing I probably wouldn’t recommend it.

We chose it because it sails from Vancouver where we live and since we aren’t interested in Alaska cruises it’s a chance to sail on a cruise that embarks there. We actually aren’t telling the kids until we get to the port.

We did that once. DD almost got run over because she was so excited jumping up and down not paying attention. Telling her while taking the suitcases out of the car in the parking lot apparently wasn't the smartest idea. But her reaction was priceless!

Oh boy. Our plan is to see just how long we can go before they figure it out, possibly waiting until we’re actually at the check in. We’re going to tell them we’re doing a staycation downtown, which is something we do now and then so they won’t be suspicious.

I’m doing this next month! We live a few stations away from Canada Place so I’ve been taking my kiddo to see the Wonder pretty much every other Monday. I can’t wait to see their face when I tell them that we’re actually boarding!

I don't know about the Vancouver to San Diego cruise, but I have done a repositioning cruise with DCL. I was on the October 31 cruise from NYC to San Juan last fall. The ship sailed at less than half capacity, which was pretty great. Unfortunately, there weren't enough guests to have two dinner services, so they put us all together and had dinner at 6:30. The restaurants were a bit more cramped than usual and the servers were clearly serving too many guests. Otherwise, it was a pretty great cruise and it was much cheaper than any other 7-night cruise on the Magic, even without a *GT rate.
