Renting to help pay for add-on?

DW and I just paid off our BWV contract. Like many others, we are having add-onitis. More points are always better. :thumbsup2

I suggested that we could do an add-on and just rent out the points to help defray the cost during the repayment period. I suspect there would be a mix of renting and our own personal use. We don't think we'll use the points ourselves in the near term. But, we know we would want them for use in a couple of years. As history as shown, it will cost more to buy later.

We're on the fence about this kind of justification. Opinions are welcome. Anyone else do this?

I'm not a big renter fan because of liability issues (i.e. renter racks up calls, room service, invites Tommy Lee over and trashes the place, etc. ), but I'd do it and transfer the points to another DVCer freeing yourself of the hastle of a renter.

Oh yeah, what are the chances........ :rotfl2: That thread cracked me up!

I haven't done it myself and I don't plan to do it for an add on, but I have some unneeded points that I got from a 2005 UY when buying in. Really, I haven't heard of any renter disasters as far as trashing the unit so I don't see what it could hurt. :confused3 I guess if it can help you reach the point of an add on... more power to you. Good luck! :thumbsup2

If you add on at the BWV, I think it's an okay move. Rooms there, especially standard view will always (in my opinion) be in demand at the 11 month window and the points will be at a premium in value.

While most people here seem to rent to pay for another trip, like a crusie (not counting the professional point renters), this is an interesting way to help fund an add-on.

Downside: You just never know what will happen in the world to hurt the rental market. I would only do it if you can afford to pay for the points on your own, even if you can't rent them.

Thanks everyone! All good suggestions.

I guess it comes to: Do we buy now at todays prices or wait until we really need the points and pay more.

something to ponder.... ;)

Rising airfares, recession, uptick in terrorist activity or flu pandemic fears could all depress travel.

I still want to buy points for my own use but wouldn't buy more than i can comfortably pay the maintenace on each year.

Relatives have a (non DVC)timeshare that they are so proud they will be able to will but i can remember how timeshare were a millstone around peoples necks in the early '90s. Don't know that any of the 4 people named to share it in the will would actually want it.
