What is renting points from members??? My DH, DD (4) and DS(1) are planning a trip to WDW the first week in June. So far we have stayed at the Swan and Allstar Sports. We are not too sure where to stay. We would like to stay MOD or Deluxe, but want a good rate. I would LOVE a villa but there are so expensive!! We are also military but SOG is booked and I have not gotten an overflow yet (waiting on the email). HELP I need suggestions!!

Hi!
Here is a link to the DVC rent/trade FAQ:
http://www.wdwinfo.com/dvc/renttrade-faq.htm

Basically it's like this. A DVC member has points they cant use. They will rent these points usually for $10 each. The amount of points you need depends on the DVC resort you choose, size of villa, and time of year. With your family you could get away with a studio or 1 bedroom. For the most space and privacy you could get a 2 bedroom. You could look on the rent/trade board here on this site. Usualy the member has rented before and could help walk you through the process.

I have rented points last Nov from a member here. Everything went smoothly. For my upcoming trip I also have rented points from a member of these boards. This is how we did it. I knew my vacation dates. I also knew where I wanted to stay and what type of room I wanted. I saw that someone was renting points for $10 each. I contacted them, they made the ressies. I sent half a deposit once I had a copy of the ressie from DVC with my name on it. The remainder is due 30 days prior to our trip. I have the person's name, address, and phone # just in case something comes up. It does require some trust. I sent the deposit via paypal. The first time we rented we did it by money orders. Some people write up contrats and set it up different ways. This trip coming we are staying at the BWV in a studio for 5 nights with a BW view for $600!! When you rent there is no tax. For the weekend we are going to stay at another Disney resort.
Here's a link to the points calculator:
http://www.wdwinfo.com/resort/dvcpoint.cfm

Also, keep in mind it costs more to rent on weekends. Meaning the points are higher. As an example. Let's say your vacation dates are Sun May 30- Sun. June 6th. 7 nights, 8 days. To stay at the BWV in a 1 bedroom would be 210 points(standard view) At $10 per point that's $2100, or $300 per night. The rack rate at that time is $435 per night plus 11.5% tax.($485)
If you are looking to save more money then you could do a studio or 1 bedroom for 5 nights, no weekend. That would be 110 points for the 1 bedroom and 55 points for the studio!!!
But, you better hurry if you have your heart set on a particular resort and/or your dates can't be changed. The villas go quickly and June is a popular month. Also it can be crowded/hotels book up because of "Gay Days" that will be going on the first week of June.

Hope I didn't ramble and just confuse you more!!

BTW, WELCOME TO THE DIS!!!!!!!!:wave2:

Thank you soooooooo much I totally understand now! You are GREAT!!!!

I am renting from a member 2 studios at OkW, Thanksgiving week Sun-Fri for $920.00. We really love the mini kitchen and patio. Such a deal!

The remainder being due 30 days before the trip was a rule that particular DVC member made. There are no rules for these transactions, its completely between the member and the renter.

Because of the peril of canceling a trip so close, most members want to be paid in full long before that 30 day mark.

I think its absolutely fair for the member to want to get paid in full shortly after the rentee has a confirmation in their hand. As members, we lose value, maybe even lose the points, if a cancelation is made that close to the trip.

I don't rent points, I am too busy using them....I did rent some once, for a one night OKW studio stay, I had ten extra one year that I couldn't bank, I rented them for $80.

I have also rented. It is a really good way to save a lot of money but it does require trust and I strongly recommend having some sort of contract or agreement on paper between the two of you.

The last time I rented it was a good experience (so far) -the DVC owner was very responsive to my questions and concerns (and I tried to be as well). They did not have a problem with a written agreement which I typed up before the reservation was made, emailed it to her - she reviewed it and made some additions - we both signed it and gave copies to each other via mail. Then she made the reservation I needed (they can make them at their "home resort" 11 months out...and I think for the other resorts at 9 months out... I might be wrong about these dates - please check with someone else).

Anyway, she made the reservation, I confirmed it with member services by phone, I mailed her a check for the full amount, she mailed me the confirmation paper.

I'll also check to make sure the reservation is "still there" close to the trip time - as the DVC owner can technically cancel the reservation at any time....or maybe they don't pay their dues and the reservation gets canceled by member services, etc....
In any case, that is why you should have the written agreement in case there is a "problem".
Hope this helps.

We are renting points from a DVC member for October which will be my first trip to Disney and my wife's 3rd trip but first in a long time.

We were facing staying at a value resort (definitely nothing wrong with that) but then I checked into this renting points I heard about. After thorough research on my part and a LOT of help from the kind people on that board I felt comfortable enough to set up an agreement with a member. We are now staying at OKW in a studio for considerably less than what we would have paid for a standard room at a value resort. You really cant beat that!

It does require trust on both parts so if you aren't able to feel comfortable sending money to someone you basically dont know then I would just get your hotel room the way you feel best doing. A vacation is about enjoying yourself and anticipation but if you are too worried about losing that money its not worth it IMO even if it is a great deal IMO.

Our agreement went like this. I sent her the dates I needed and my preferences (BWV or OKW, studio, non-smoking) and she made those reservations for me. Once this was done I called member services and confirmed the reservation in OUR name. After confirmation we sent her 1/2 the total. Once she got this she sent us the confirmation from Disney with OUR name on it (just got it yesterday!) and we will send her the full amount by August 15th which allows her time to still manage her points should something happen and we didnt get to go. This all seemed very fair to me and I trust the person I am dealing with so its a win-win for everyone involved.

p.s. Thanks Lori! :wave2:

I agree with Rich's post above. We rented for the first time to pay cash for Disney cruise. I posted 300 pts on the rent/trade board and a person contact me with-in 1 hour and wanted all 300 pts.

I wanted 2/3 of the cash up front. Then I mailed the confirmation with the renter's name on it. His balance is due 60 days before his reservation. If he doesn't mail the balance, he knows the reservation will be cancled.

If you are talking about June 2004, you are probably out of luck for renting points. Most villas are already booked for that time of year (members can make their reservations 11 months out at their home resort and 7 months out at non-home resorts). You could see if someone has a reservation that they are trying to rent.
