REnting DVC points? Embarrassed to say, I have no clue what this is. can anyone e

I just actually answered someone's PM'ed question about this, so I'm going to copy + paste my answer...

Well this is our first year doing it – and we’re doing it for 2 different trips! I first read this board to kind of the learn the basics of renting points:
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2647748
And then I watched these 2 boards looking for people renting points:
http://www.disboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=29
won't let me paste this one - mouse owners dot com, then look for the rent board

We ended up renting points from someone from the Disboards for our September trip, and then I found someone on Mouse Owners for our December trip.
One main thing to know is that points rent FAST! So we hurried and figured out our dates so that as soon as I saw someone renting points that would work for us I could jump on it. Each person renting points will “own” at a certain resort (sometimes at more than one). DVC owners can book stays at 11 months out at the resort(s) where they own points, and at 7 months out (I think) at all resorts regardless of where they own. Because we knew specifically where we wanted to stay – and our December stay is over Christmas AND New Years I made sure to find someone who owned BCV points so they could book asap. We lucked out and got exactly what we wanted and so far so good. You can still use Magical Express and can still add the dining plan if you choose.

The one thing it restricts you from doing is benefiting from any promos that Disney runs (like Free Dining)…but to us, the discount of staying deluxe for a hugely decreased price is better than any promo that Disney can run.

We rented points for $12/point for both of our trips. Just to give you an idea on pricing

To figure out where you’d want to stay and how many points you would need, there is a DVC point calculator found here:
http://www.wdwinfo.com/resort/dvcpoint.cfm
Points chart:
http://www.wdwinfo.com/disney-vacati...VCpoints.shtml

You do have to trust the person that you're renting from. In our case we rented from two owners who had rented before and offered references - though I did not ask for them. They make the reservation for you, though in your name and with your address, and they'd book your ME for you if you choose to use it. Basically they're your go-to person instead of Disney.

I’ve learned quite a bit about this as we have gone along. If you are dead set on a certain resort (like we were), it is crucial to plan ahead and have your dates set far in advance. If you’re not as picky on which resort, I’d say you could probably find availability closer to your dates. Feel free to ask anything else, I’m happy to share my knowledge and save other DISers some money! They say “once you go deluxe you never go back” and that is definitely true for my dad. So this year I had to find a way to go deluxe on a budget…as we totally agree with you that it is so hard for us to justify that huge cost that a deluxe is if you pay full price! That money could always go to use somewhere else, so it is nice to not have to spend as much!

explain? go slow now....
:) I LOVE WDW

Go to the DVC section of this board and go to the rental board. There is a sticky at the top that explains all about renting points. That would be the best source of information.

Good luck, it is a great way to go to get a deluxe room for half the cost.

so if AKV cost 56 points, how much is that?

Thanks Jennifer.

so i'm renting from a person who owns?

as in, on ebay?

i have flex dates, i'm a florida resident and i am flex on resort , except not doing the cheaper one. will only consider moderate and up.

how would i find a seller? thanks

You'd find a seller by looking on one of the renting boards. That is where owners will post that they have points to rent, how many points and at how much per point. That is how I found the two owners that we are renting from this fall.

The cost of 56 points would depend on the owner and how much they are renting for. In our case, we rented at $12/point, but some owners will rent their points for less and some for more.

I like the targel points calculator.
just google dvc points calculator and look for the one with targel in it

enter your dates and it will say how many points you need

Typically points do not go on Ebay for DVC there are several avenues the easiest being the DVC rent/trade board.

Points seem to go from $10 to $12 depending on time of year and popularity of location; I've seen some last minute points for less typically $8 and some prime for more $13.

Cheapest days are Sun-Mon-Tue-Wed-Thu it's almsot double for Fri and Sat so most do Sun-Fri [check out Friday].

No maid service but can add dining plan and get EMH also free parking

I have never done it myself yet but have learned all about it and helped others do it. We're a family of 5 so it's not as affordable. Studio is such a great deal!

Ok, so i have some dates and AKL will be 46 points (4 days). so if i contact an owner and he sells me 46 points @ $10 each, AKL will cost me $460 for 4 days? does that sound right?

I did this for my trip to WDW last October. I stayed at AKV Kidani. I found the seller on the Rent/Trade board here on the DIS. Be sure to follow all of the "tips" listed for a smooth transaction. You have to trust the person you are doing the transaction with (as well as they have to trust you).

Usually it is non-refundable once you pay the seller and payment is usually made in full after you receive confirmation. This varies by seller though.

One of the best things about renting points is that you can add the dining plan without getting tickets. This is great for people who buy a 10 day non-expiration pass to last several trips or buy AP's. The seller adds this for you and you pay when you check in.

It may take some time to find the right seller with the amount of points you need. Good luck! I ended up paying less than $160 a night for a deluxe studio Savannah view room :thumbsup2.

Most of the time you will have to pay the Paypal fee when you use your credit card. This varies by seller but I've always had to. It's a small percentage but just so you're aware.

And i am on the board and it's confusing :confused3

so who makes the reservation? if a guy is renting points, how do you know which weeks it covers?

grrrrrrrrrr

Someone lists points, you contact the person however they asked to be contacted, and tell them your dates, preferred resort, and how many points needed, they call and make the reservation, you pay them once you receive confirmation. This all varies by seller and is just a general idea, the rent/trade board has the specifics of how to handle these transactions.

You contact an owner (through the rent trade board or another venue) and the owner then works with you to make a reservation for your date.

DVC points are only a "deal" at DVC resorts. DVC rooms are not hotel rooms, they are timeshare rooms - and there are some differences - no mousekeeping and - except at OKW - a studio will have a queen bed and a full pullout.

Note that the OWNER controls the reservation at all times. And this isn't through Disney - so Disney will not step in if there has been a miscommunication (or outright fraud, which seldom happens, but can happen). Also note that timeshare cancellation penalties are very different than the hotel side - if you need to cancel or move your reservation your owner MAY NOT BE ABLE TO HELP YOU EVEN IF THEY WANT TO (and not all owners are willing to help). Its best to think of the transaction as final. Also, you should be aware that DVC resorts often book up early - its best to make any DVC plans at least six months out - even then you may not get exactly what you want.

Since you aren't a member of the Disney Vatation Club (DVC) the person you rent points from will need to make the reservation. As for the weeks it covers, I may be a little confused here. Points are points. Each week requires a specific amt of points for that week. Just like paying cash online, peak season costs more than off peak. The DVC member will know how far out in advance he/she can book because they know when their points expire and replenish and what not. It is much cheaper than booking through Disney. The average I have seen on the Disboards is about $10 per point. I just rented for our October Trip for $9.50 per point. We have a DVC membership so they transferred the points to us and I was able to make the reservation. Keep in mind, Animal Kingdom Villas book up pretty fast because they are the cheapest.

Right. You contact an owner who has points to rent. Let them know what resort you'd like to stay at (maybe list out your top 3 resorts in order of preference), your dates, and how many people in your party. The owner then checks on availability and will let you know if they will be able to rent their points to you or not. It's all about finding the right renter with the right number of points at the right resort. I had to contact a few owners before I found one that would work out for us.

even cheaper than the Florida resident rate?

woohoooo
:goodvibes

How do you know you can trust them? how do you pay? credit card and does disney allow all this?

Usually through Paypal with a credit card. Yes, Disney allows this (for now lol, I'm sure one day they'll try to figure out a way to get the money back in their pocket).

There's many "tips" on the rent/trade board on ways to be able to trust the seller. Even then, you do have to have some faith in it too. DVC is a deeded item so you can check Orlando property records to make sure the person even has a DVC contract. Also, get references and check them. Signing a contract is also a more secure way to handle the transaction. I personally choose not to rent from someone who has very few posts (or hasn't been on the DIS long) and may just be a scammer.

Not exactly sure what you mean? I would think OKW points are by far the cheapest, or, at least, you get the most for your money?

How do you know you can trust them? how do you pay? credit card and does disney allow all this?

If you are renting DVC points from a DVC member this is permitted by Disney Vacation Development Corp. which is the "Disney" of this part of the Disney empire BUT it is not the same as booking through Disney's Central Reservations Office ( and you can book DVC villas through this traditional booking method so you might want to look into this first for a DVC villa because often there are discounts as high as 40% off ) but understand that DISNEY will absolutely have no part in helping you out with your rented points reservation in any way and that includes if the member you rent your reservation from is unscrupulous and rips you off. That is why you have to decide if the savings that you will realize is worth the leap of faith when renting from a DVC member.

Also, you do not 'own' that DVC reservation you have via the rented points until you check in and that member can cancel it at any time prior to your check in. Now please don't think I am putting all members down ( I'm a member myself but don't rent my points ) because majority are good, honest people but just like anything else in life there can be some bad apples. You'd be wise to investigate this further by reading the stickies atop the DVC Rent / Trade Board here on the DIS and get references, pay via Pay Pal if possible and get a contract stating exactly what your money is getting you and what the member's cancellation policy is because most members will not refund money if a reservation they rent out has to be cancelled because DVC cancellation policies are very restrictive compared to regular cash reservation cancellation policies.

It's alot to digest and learn but you can have the opportunity to save a good amount of money renting through a DVC member. Just do you homework real well.

Best wishes :goodvibes

I think he may mean "cheapest" in regards to the "least" amount of points needed to rent a studio or one bedroom. AKV have the "value" studio and "value" one bedroom options available so you can get one of those for less points than a standard studio or one bedroom elsewhere.
