Has anyone here ever rented a tv, or appliances, etc from Renta Center( or the like?). I am sure in the long run it is cheaper to byour own, but just wondering how their prices are. For example, Say you need a washer and dryer. You can purchase a basic set say, from Sears for 800. plus tax, plus 65.00 for delivery plus another 100. each for their protection agreement. If you rent, delivery is free and so is service. I looked at Rentacenter web site and they dont list prices for their products.

DO NOT do it!!!! You will end up paying 3-4 times MORE for the item by going through a rent to own place.

I looked at an ad for them one time and figured up the weekly payment times the number of payments and it was ridiculous!!!!!!!!! I really do not get how they can charge so much for interest and such. A former employee of mine was going to get a simple stereo that would have been about 200 at the store and by the time she finished payments she would have paid over $1000 for it.

Yes the only time we did it was in college- when we clearly didn't need an item after the 9 months of school. (We rented a big TV- and it wasn't expensive because we divided it by 6 of us - but really I am sure we could have bought that tv twice over in the 9 months of payments)

If it's something you intend to buy then I would just go buy it. not rent a center buy it.

I would not do it. You will pay three to four times the amount that it would be elsehwhere. If you are stuck and need something for a week or two it would be good to hold you over but the interest rate is crazy.

Here is some of the FINE PRINT:

If you have a Sears card, you can often get interest free for six or more months at certain times during the year. Just pay it off before the time expires.

Sears also does free delivery as part of their sales. Keep an eye out for it. It is a actually an online rebate, but you do get the money back. We just purchased all new appliances in Oct and they had the 6 months no financing deal as well as the free delivery. We didn't do the no financing deal as we were paying cash, so I'm not sure if you can stack the deals or not.

my sister and brother in law have both worked at r-a-c and at an aarons. They charge you astronomical amounts in interest as well. Basically those stores are for people with really bad credit that can't get it anywhere else. They worked there and would never get anything from them. Ever.

I've got to second everything others have posted and add my two cents worth. I see these "rent to own" companies come to court, getting criminal charges against someone who falls behind in their payments. Not a civil suit to collect the money they are owed under the contract, but a criminal charge where jail time is possible. This is in Virginia, it may be different in your state.

if your desperate, go with a used set from the paper till you can get the set you want.
and as annoying as they are, appliance direct prices aren't so bad. Nothing wrong with dents on a side of a washer that'll never be seen because it's sitting in a tiny closet surrounded by walls.

What exactly are you looking to buy?? Sometimes the rental prices at apartments aren't so bad for washer/dryer sets.. But owning your own is nice too.

Just wanted to mention, while I agree renting items is astronomical and such a rip off. Many of them have 90 days same as cash. It is interest free and still the free delivery. We were pricing a new fridge recently and the rental place was the cheaper option considering the free delivery and setup (can't remember about old appliance removal). If you immediatly pay it off that is. If not they default to the weekly or monthly payments.

You can usually find 0% financing for six months or a year. I've found Sears' prices to be better than Home Depot most of the time and their service department is pretty reliable and quick. Even if you had to pay delivery and hook-up, you'd still be much better off financially (but you can get this thrown in for free at both places I mentioned if you have time to watch for offers). RAC interest will eat you alive!!
The vast majority of our appliances over the years have come from Sears. We bought the protection plans for years, but have only had dish washers break down... We always had issues with them (I finally gave up and wash by hand). Some folks will slam me for saying this, but we've quit buying into the protection plans. Not worth it for us. My fridge is 15 years old and still humming along without a glitch. I had to invest in new washer after 13 years and a new dryer after 14 years; but I'm hard on them (DSis can't believe I do the large entry rugs and husbands oily work clothes in there every week).

Run from these places! Was just killing time one morning while waiting for another store to open and I thought I would just walk in and look around and see exactly how high priced their items were. I thought I would choke when I got in there and saw some of the prices and agreements. On one tv you would pay 3 times as much when you got finished as you would in a Best Buy or Walmart. I heard they were overpriced and have many fees but didnt know they were that bad!

Also, if you have one in your area, check Lowe's.

My washer died a few months ago and after searching around, i got a $498 Maytag for $325 - It was marked down to $398, price matched it to Sears who had it for $359, got the Price Match Guarantee 10% Discount and got free delivery, free removal and free installation.

If you have to make due iwth a laundry mat for a few days (weeks?), it's still better in the long run than doing RentA Center. Those and Cash Advance places are EVIL!
