Rental Car Insurance?

I read somewhere you should bring proof of insurance with you. Exactly what paperwork do you need to rent a car? Will I get this kind of information when I get my travel docs from AAA?

If you are renting from one of the major car rental companies chances are they won't ask to see your insurance paperwork.

Just be sure to see what your insurance covers before you decline any of the car rentals insurance. You could be responsible for quite a bit of money in case of an accident.

Your AAA docs will not have this type of information.

Some rental companies including Payless, L&M, and EZ reserve the right not to rent to you unless you can prove have collision on a car you own back at home, or purchase the company's collision coverage.

Some companies require proof of so much liability insurance on your own car.

If the agent is not desperately trying to make sales quotas and the company is not running short of cars e.g. Daytona Week, the agent might not ask.

View the rental company';s rules, policies, or terms on its website and Travelociy .com and assume the worse of the two applies.

I always bring proof and haven't been asked, even by L & M, but I prefer to have it just in case. Don't let an agent "trick" you into buying insurance. Alamo is favorite for saying, "Do you want the deluxe coverage, or just the basic?", trying to imply you have to choose one or the other. I've had them cop a real attitude when I say, "Neither."

I carry a copy of a declarations page from one of our vehicles. That page lists the various coverages on that vehicle. An insurance card form our state does not list the coverages you have. That said, I've only been asked for the info by Alamo, but I do not use them anymore for other reasons.
