Has anyone here been to a Renaissance festival before? Do you usually go with a big group of people?

Do you I would feel awkward if I went alone? None of my friends are into that kind of stuff... lol.

We have one here in Kansas City every year. We've been a few times. It's like a cross between a county fair and a costume party.

LOTS of adults dressed up playing the parts of different types of people from the Renaissance era. There are lots of booths to shop and foods to eat plus street entertainment (some organized and some just seem pop up out of no where) and usually a jousting contest. And of course the King and Queen might drive by.

You'd probably enjoy it alone... just wandering around to see what there is to see.

My father and I have been going the Kansas City festival every year since I was in elementary school. It is considered best in the country. I have owned my own garb (they hate it when you call it costumes) for quite a few years. Last year my father broke down and bought garb for himself. Over the years we have taken various friends, but it's never been more than three.

It really is a lot of fun. They have various stage acts (some of which are definitely PG-13 or R rated), artisans who make and sell period style crafts, and each year is themed different with street characters and scenarios to match. This year it was Midsummer's Night Dream.

I would never feel awkward for going alone, but it's more fun with friends. Why not try asking them? They might surprise you.

To me, it's just like going to any other themed festival. There are entertainers -- some on stage, some walking around -- there are craft booths, food booths, games, maybe some rides. Some people get all dressed up to go to them, but most people don't.

Ask your friends anyway! My husband used to really be into that sort of thing. I never was, but I do enjoy going to the festivals once in a while.

I love Renaissance Festivals, they are a blast. Honestly, I think it'd be more fun to go alone, than go with people who aren't into it. ;)

They tend to attract outgoing, friendly folks who will talk to everyone, so you wouldn't be alone for long, unless you wanted to be. :)

Thanks for the replies.

I already did ask my friends and they teasingly called me dorky for liking that sort of stuff. I'm the type of person that can go shopping alone because I like to browse and take my time. I know it probably is a lot more fun with friends, though.

It's been several years since I've been to a Renaissance festival. I've been to four different ones -- the GA Renaissance Faire many times, and once to one in CA, one in MA and one in VA. Which one are you going to?

I've been with large groups, on dates (pre-marriage, of course), and solo. I've never felt awkward going alone, but then I never felt awkward doing things like that by myself.

I think it would be fine to go alone. I love the jousting competitions and the human chess matches. There are all types of booths for crafts and food. I had an acquaintance who had a henna tattoo booth.

Also, you can get a big turkey leg like the sell at Disney!

I'm going to the Carolina Renaissance Festival in Charlotte, NC.
It's only about an hour away from where I live.

We go to Scarborough (which in Waxahachie, about an hour or so away) almost every year. I LOVE going. About three years ago was the first year I went in garb..a homemade dress which was, I have to say, quite hideous.:lmao:

Next season when we go, I'll be going in much better garb than I've worn in the past. I made myself a calf-length chemise which isn't fancy, but it's servicable and I'm going to pair it with an ankle-length brown skirt I picked up at a garage sale for about a buck as well as a beautiful cream w/roses brocade bodice I was able to pick up for a song. I had to alter it though because when I first laced it up, I couldn't breathe and I had my girls spilling out over the top in kind of a gross way.:rotfl:

These are two pictures I took at the Texas Renaissance Festival last weekend.

i have worked at several over the years. in various different roles... actor to booth worker. i love it. i own way too much garb though. definately go by yourself if your friends aren't into it. ruins the whole day if you have to listen to complaining.
