It has been on the car for a long time and we can't it off now - any suggestions?
 
You could also try "Goo Gone" available in (department/hardware/supermarkets)...

WD-40 should work, but make sure you wash the area with DAWN afterwards. Dawn will remove all of the oily residue left by the WD-40, then apply a good coat of wax to protect the area. One problem I can see coming though, is that if it has been on long and it is a painted surface, there is a good chance that the paint may look a shade or 2 off form the surrounding paint due to the different exposure to the sun.
