Ultimate Weight Loss Challenge - Show 4
With the 13 Weight Loss Challenge finalists living under one roof, Dr. Phil gives them the most grueling trial of their will and dedication. Hear their emotional stories as they go one-on-one with Dr. Phil, and find out who's up to the challenge.

Wow -- that sounds like Dr.Phil's 'Survivor' challenge. Reality TV is taking another turn.

It sounds like they could be two very emotional shows.

Thanks for the reminder -- watching it now.

The monday show has only been on for 10 minutes and I am fuming! Dr.Phil is playing for ratings and screwing with these peoples lives! He graciously picked 13 people to help with their weight loss issues. He now has them in this house for 5 days to see who surives the 'honor' of having him help them lose weight. Yes, he has just announced that after the 5 days he will tell 5 people that they are not worthy of his help and send them packing. He is going to narrow down the field to 8 people. PLUS he is trying to sabotage their efforts by having a pantry stocked full of junk food ---- one person called it the temptation mansion.

I am getting more and more dissappointed by Dr.Phil each day.

For those that are benefiting from his new approach to weight loss --- I am happy for you and not trying to demean your efforts in anyway.

Jody:

I'm pretty shocked at this, too! I'm watching, hoping that the reason for all of this will be explained.

My first reaction though, is if you didn't think all these people were ready, why not pick others that truly might have been? I think it's going to be devastating for the 5 people sent home!

Amy -
I don't know why I don't just turn the chanel but I am in awe and cannot believe this show! Those poor five people may be hurt for life by this. He is playing with REAL PEOPLE here! OMG, this is unbelievable.......:(

edited to add....
After I watched the entire hour show I have to say that Dr.Phil does have some great information to offer and I think he could be a real help/eye opener to these people but I personally feel that this approach is wrong and is nothing but a way to add higher ratings to his show and more dollar signs to his pocket. If this was any other joe out doing this show I maybe wouldn't have as much of a problem with it but this is a physciatrist that is trying to make an empire of 'helping' people and it seems that a few people are going to get hurt big time.

Well, Dr. Phil has his own survivor show going. He's proud of everyone. I'm proud of y'all too. Do you think I could get my own show? Probably not ;)

Unfortunately, you can't keep a television show without good ratings and I imagine these programs are getting good ratings. That's a good thing, really. I really admire Dr. Phil's down to earth good sense. I hope we can all manage to learn something from his programs about weight loss.

and am taping tomorrows. I was disappointed to hear him say he'd be eliminating 5 more people - but lets see how he justifies his choices tomorrow. I took it that he wanted a deep look into their lives to narrow it down. I really hope he chooses the five that he feels are likely to succeed without being in his direct program, then I hope he helps them to connect with a buddy like our wonderful group here!

I thought the pantry thing was kinda mean too. You know none of them would indulge knowing it would've been on tv!! And for the cake - he shouldve sliced it equally and encouraged them b/c it is ok to eat treats moderately. If this group feels like they have to give everything up cold turky - well, i'm afriad they're just setting themselves up for unhealthy guilt when they do eat "sin foods" as they called it. Actually, i'd rather them sent a low-fat cake and explained that treats can be chosen wisely!! Nothing has to be given up - moderation is the key! (well i'm on WW I understand that's not true for all plans)

I was, however, pleased to see they sought medical approval for everyone and then did a fitness test. How amazing it will be in just a few months to retest this group and see the changes!!

I think Katholyn has a point, it is about ratings to some degree. Sadly though some of these folks are going to be hurt and they are not in a good place right now to have that happen. I only hope his staff will be following up with them. But, if they are truly ready to lose the weight, they will not give up!!

I'm in the Dr. Phil turns Jerry Springer camp. Kath, I do agree, he needs to keep ratings up, but was he having trouble with ratings? I will be the first to admit, I'm not a huge reality fan anyway, (life is real enough for me as it is ;) ) so this really disappointed me. On the other hand, if one chooses to publicly display themselves in this fashion, who am I to deny them their just reward? I hope they do well, and lose the weight. If anyone can reach them, it's Dr. Phil. He's never been know to be entirely warm and fuzzy, but his sincerity does shine through! And yes, if he can help anyone else watching, then I guess it is the right approach. I won't be watching though.

Keep the Faith!
Tracy

I'm still not sure what I think, except that all of you have posted good points! :)

I'm going to tune in tomorrow to see what happens, if only because I'm reading his book (after debating back and forth about getting yet ANOTHER weight loss book) and it really is making sense to me. I'm hoping what he's doing with his show will make sense to me, too (and I hope it's soon!).

I have to sya that the plan is working for me and I will stick with it but I am disgusted with the man himself right now!

First he goes and puts out weight loss "supplements" and now this.
I honestly dont see how this is suuposed to help anyone.

He said today " this is not weight loss booot camp" well yeah it is, if you cant hack it youre out.

I can understand it to a degree, if you really want it then youll do it and youll follow the advice in the book, but most of this is just sensationalism IMHO and nothing else.
If he really wanted to help people he could have just done it and not been so cruel about the whole thing.

I watched it too, and thought how hard it would be to leave in a few days after thinking you are one of the 13 chosen.
It's too soon to judge...but I think the blonde lady that missed the Springstein concert to be on the show and her friend with the short red hair may be out??? Did anyone else think they were not 100% into group support?

The only thing that really bothered me was that they were given so little direction the first day. I was not bothered by the junk food. I thought it was weird that people were so upset about it being thrown away - I thought that was a logical and helpful step. If they were upset that it was done without them, okay, but acting like the people did something horrible was out of line. I don't get how everyone was upset about the temptation, but then upset when it was gone!

I thought the cake was unfair though. Knowing that not everyone gets to stay added to the confusion of what to do for fear of failing the "test".

IMO the blond mom who wants her candy in moderation won't make the cut. They are only in the house for a while - she should be willing to get rid of the temptations for the sake of the others if not herself. I would also be concerned about her calorie comparison - while obviously true in some ways, it's not a good idea to routinely eat empty calories. A treat once in a while is different, but it was the second day of eating healthy and they should be trying to establish good patterns.

I hope the one gal dumps her fiance. 5 days in a house that happens to have a few men there shouldn't be a bid deal to a stable relationship. Good grief, the whole country is watching - what does he think is going to happen? I felt so bad for her.

I really felt sorry for the gal who made comments about two and Dr. Phil narked on her and made her say it to their faces! Yikes!

I really like the young gal who was the rape victim(I know that's a horrible way to discribe someone, but I can't remember names yet). She just seems so likable I want to give her a hug!

As much as it turned me 'off' I have to now admit that I will be likely tuning in to see what happens next. This kind of sounds like a discussion on the 'Survivor' thread and I guess it is pretty much the same thing. Just not what I expected from Dr. Phil.

Hmmmm, Dr. PHil. Well, I have to say I was a little surprised that he is only going to pick 8. I guess I am holding out hope that if he sees more than 8 are ready, then he would take more, but I don't think there will be another "lucky 13" I think it will stink for the 5 that are "dissmissed" but in a way I can see why he would do it. In order for his new book/system to have validity, he has to be sure that the people he picks will get the job done. Can you imagine if the 13 picked didn't loose anything in 1 year? He would lose all credibility. Dr. Phil is a tough guy, and I think he is going to be very tough on these guys. who are your favorites? Mine is Mari ann (I think that is her name, the one who's heart rate went so high), Terry, and the radio guy. I don't like the lady that made that terrible joke. and the lady who's husband made the back up alarms. Dr. Phil almost made it seem like she was in the confessional trying to help her situation by trying to eliminate others. I did think it was hilarious that the early risers got such a treat. I would have gotten up by 7:00 so I don't think I would have made the early group. But good heavens, I would NOT have slept in until 9:15!!!!! Actually I think I might have been up early for a walk. Who knows. I am in the minority I guess, as I do like the show, and it is interesting to see how these people are relating to each other. I do think I would be going all out for this, and not crying over some junk food that was thrown out. And YOu KNOW how much I love junk food!
