Remakes - are they ever any good

I don't think I've ever seen a movie re-make I liked. I see they are attempting again to re-do Rocky Horror. It would probably end up making me very sad. But like a fool I'll get suckered in and go see it, if it happened.

Dawn of the Dead was excellent. The new movie Let Me In was another excellent remake. And let's not forget that Planet of the Apes remak... of wait... let's forget that one.

Dawn of the Dead is the best remake ever. Awesome original, awesome remake.

I didn't hate the remake of Nightmare on Elm Street.

I can't believe they're making a new Rocky Horror Picture Show.. what's the point? They'll never be able to make it as good as the first.. That's like trying to remake the Star Wars movies .

Star Trek wasn't a remake. It was a prequel (technically).

There's a True Grit remake coming out shortly that looks pretty good.

Generally speaking, I am not a fan of the "do-over". Most of the films were just fine the first time around. Though I did like the redo of The Hulk (but then again, I am one of the very few who also liked Ang Lee's version).

I dislike most remakes. I did really enjoy the remake of psycho with Vince Vaughn I also liked the remake of Nightmare on Elm Street.

Most remakes are awful. I generally avoid them unless people really go on about how good they are. I plan to avoid any remake of Rocky Horror.

I like both the old Ocean's Eleven with Sinatra etc, and the new one with Clooney etc. Slightly different stories, definitely different outcomes, but both good!

I'm not a fan of Rocky Horror anyway, so they can do whatever they want with that movie.

The thing with Rocky Horror is that the original movie is really pretty bad. I mean, if you strip away all the cult stuff that we've all built up around it, it's really a bad movie. I love it, but it's horrible.

So, what do they expect to happen with a remake? Do they really think they can take that story and make it appealing to watch without all the audience participation? Or do they just figure we'll all go see it and do the same things we do with the original? I don't think that's gonna happen.

A remake, in this case, is not a good idea.

Can we just agree that movies such as Star Trek, Casino Royale, and Batman Begins are not remakes, but are reboots? We can?

Having said that: Off the top of my head, I can think of at least three remakes that are at least as good as the originals, if not better (and are a damn sight better than the obscenely overrated, Zach Snyder helmed Dawn of the Dead remake): Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Fly, and The Magnificent Seven.

I think Hitchcock remade 39 steps, the man who knoew to much, and a couple of others. Better film and sound alone make them better than originals.

Sometimes I think they make things again just so the current youth group can see their own faves, instead of wondering who on earth those other people are up on screen. I remember very well wondering why the people in RH were considered attractive or interesting at all. Took me YEARS to even come close to understanding the appeal of Sarandon. My mom, however, thought she was awesome (though I'm not sure she ever saw the movie, being too busy with other parts of her life to get into RHPS) and beautiful etc. I can only imagine the disconnect with younger viewers of the movie is even bigger. I mean, I was trying to figure out who these "old" actors were in the 80s! And since I saw Clue before RHPS, the appeal of Tim Curry remains forever lost from me. Barry Bostwick was first George Washington to me. etc etc.

So I can understand wanting to remake things with current younger actors...
