What is the best source of info, which website. What is a good area to be looking at?My DH is in the floor covering business so that is our main priority.

Please tell me what you like about your area in Northern or Central Florida.

Thanks,
Misty

We're moving to Ocala in Marion County, Fl. We picked the area because that's where DH was offered a great job.

We can't wait to get out of PA!( no offense to PA residents ;) )

Start with www.MyFlorida.com. It is the "Official" sate website & is a good place to begin.

I Live in St Augustine, St Johns County (9th fastest growing county in the USA). South of Jacksonville, north of Daytona.

Likes: Pretty. Lots of water. Lots of outdoor recreational opportunites. Pretty close to everything in North FL. Approx 2 hour drive from WDW (maybe a bit far, but I do not want to be near the Central Florida/Orlando rat race). Employement picture is pretty good. School system is pretty good. Warm winters (usually less than 10 nights of freezing temperature a year).

Dislikes: We're getting crowded. Fast. Housing costs are on an upward rocket ride. My house that we built for $180K (including land) 11 years ago would probably sell for $500K + today.

Will you be renting or buying? And do you have children (need to know if school system matters).

We live in Altamonte Springs area and love it. We are 5 minutes from everything and only 30-45 minutes from WDW (depending on traffic). So we have some distance from the tourists.

You can also visit the Orlando Sentinal site, they have a relocation page at http://www.orlandosentinel.com/other/relocation/

Any questions just PM me. :flower:

I live in Auburndale which is located about 30 miles from WDW. No kids here so I'm no help with schools.

Here's a link to the town's website.
Auburndale, FL

It's a small town, the population is only around 11,000, but we've got Winter Haven and Lakeland right down the street. It's also convenient to I-4. I'm only 4 miles away. Lots of lakes, easy shopping and well, it's just a regular town that happens to be less than an hour from WDW.

We do not have kids and it will probably be at least 2-3 years before we do.We would definetly buy, because i hear the price of housing is crazy so if we rented and waited a year or so to buy then we would be kicking ourselves.

Thanks for all the links,I know what i will be doing.

Please keep um coming.I definetly need all the help I can get.

Misty

We love Vero Beach! It's a little further from WDW than we'd like (about 1.5 hours) but there is plenty of work for floor installers here. The local CarpetOne franchise is advertising for help. Still much hurricane damage and lots of new construction. DH's aunt is trying to get new flooring and having trouble getting someone to do the work. It's worth looking into!

I would love, love, love to move to Florida but how do you Floridians stand the hot humid weather? We're in New Jersey and it was so humid here today that my hair was practically standing on end. I'd be in FL in a hot minute if it weren't for the hot weather. I mean I think it's pleasant during all times of the year except for the summer. Whoo, I'm melting just thinking about it.

Easy, I hate snow. I would so much rather deal with a few months of hot humid weather and stay inside with the air conditioning, go to the pool, the water park, or to WDW in the evening then have to deal with 4-5 months of snow and cold weather. I will never go back to the snow.

Yup to the above. We've had a few pretty hot days so far but they haven't bothered me at all. You get hot and just go back inside to the central air. I'm a morning person so I'm usually out the door by 9 and home by 11 or so. It is really pleasant that time of the day.

http://vero-beach.fl.us is the main web site for the city of Vero. There is a link on that site to the one for Indian River County government, the area outside the Vero city limits. Most of us who say we are from Vero Beach are really in Indian River County.

Another good link is http://www.indianriverchamber.com/, the Indian River County Chamber of Commerce.

Hope this gives you the information that you need.

I have wondered the SAME thing about "you all" handling the hot humid weather.........then gshoemate pretty much explained it. Since I have never lived in the snow and know how cold :cold: it can be.........I guess I understand.

Good luck in your decision making!!!

to: luvindisneyworld, I would like to PM you about North Carolina , If I may. Thx :flower:

We love it on the beachside of Melbourne :) We're about 25 minutes north of Vero. We landed here because of DH's job, but everything happens for a reason...it was home the minute we got here :goodvibes BTW, it took us 3 months to get our flooring installed here, and that was with us bugging the flooring store constantly :sad2: It delayed our move to our home from our apt for literally months. There is a lot of flooring work from the hurricaines here still.

Also, schools here are good, and this is just a nice place to live. It's about 1 hour 15 minutes from WDW.

I have a question for any DISers familiar with Central FL. My DH has interviewed with a company for a job in the Ocala area. I'd love to find a place to live which would have decent schools, about halfway between WDW and Ocala. Our DS would like to study film at Full Sail, which is in Winter Park. Does anyone have an idea of which towns I should be looking at? Please cross your fingers that an offer comes through for us! :flower:

We live to the SW of Disney so I can't be of much help. The most important thing is to get a good real estate agent. The man we had when we were looking was amazing. He helped us find and buy a house in 7 days!!!

If you would like his name and contact information, PM me.

Just for the heck of it I typed the name of Leesburg, Fl into the Google search. Many of the towns have their own websites and can give you a detailed report of schools, etc.

This is also a good site:

City Data

Good luck

I work very near Full Sail in Winter Park.

We moved to just north of WDW from Omaha, NE. Prior to that we lived in northern Indiana.
We were use to hot and humid. We just have it longer here.
Housing is NUTS in this area. We were lucky to buy this house right before the prices really spiked up.
What we bought this house for we now could not buy a dump for. We never guessed it would have become such a good investment. In approx a year and a half time we could sell our house for almost double of what we paid. I imagine by two years time we could.
That being said, people who are looking to live in this immediate area either have to fork over a lot of money for a house, or live away from the area where you can buy more house for the buck.
It all depends on if you have to work outside of the home, and where you work.
I suspect the housing outside of this immediate area has or will skyrocket too.
I know someone west of here who has lived on a nice quiet lake front acreage for years and now is basically being polictically shoved out by growth all around their house. (Highway right up to almost the front of the house, new exit ramp, etc)
Despite hurricanes, it is a booming area.

Thanks, Virgo and Luv2. We lived in Weston, FL up until about a year ago, and then relocated to the Ann Arbor area for my dh's job. Shortly afterwards, his boss got fired, and then all of his team, (including my dh!) let go as well. My dh has interviewed for some positions here in Michigan recently, and we do enjoy the area, but we need to go wherever the job will be. I loved Florida, and don't mind the heat and humidiity at all. (I'm from Southern California originally, and we've lived all over.) I think Leesburg may be a good suggestion, and if the offer comes through, I'll definitely contact you, Virgo, for that real estate agent's info! I've also bookmarked the site you provided! Thanks for all the help! :flower:
