Relocating to WDW?

Congradulations! We are still trying to sell our house up here in PA...as soon as it does we will be joining you in Oviedo! Have a great day in the warm sun...

Let me know when!!! I love it here! And the humidity and traffic is not as bad as it was in the DC area. :wizard:

housing and insurance can kill you here. but I don't see any difference in the day to day cost of living. we've always picked a walmart over a grocery store for everyday items. but it beats living in a place where you watch corn grow for entertainment.

The cost of living change really depends on where you are from. I spent the past six years in RI (four in college and two working), and my housing and insurance went down when I moved to Florida. When I changed my car insurance to Florida, the price went down $200! The insurance guy was even impressed. My rent and utility bills went down (especially natural gas since it isn't chilly down here like it is up in RI) as well. The only thing that has gone up in price imo is groceries, especially produce. The moral of the story is RI is very expensive (and lovely) state.

Why did I move to Florida? I decided to come down here for grad school. I was deciding between a school in upstate NY and UF. I did choose UF for its strong academics in my area and the great financial aid package I got, but the warm weather and proximity to WDW didn't hurt either! It works out great, because when I feel like this from grad school :surfweb: , I go to WDW so I can feel like this :yay: again!

After some 3 years or so of talking about moving down we just put a deposit down on Berkshire Park in Windermere. Job transfers worked out as well.

Congrats! Glad everything worked out for you and I hope you'll be happy here. You should have fun at the Drivers License office.

Be sure to transfer your car insurance down BEFORE you go to the tag office or they won't give you the FL tag.

Welcome to Windermere! I hope you love it as much as I do. If you have any questions about the area, let me know and I'll help as much as possible. When you decide to change over your driver's license, just make an appointment. I did and was in and out in about ten minutes.

Congrats! Lucky you! We are right north of you (in Odenton). Best wishes for your move! :)

My wife and I where at a crossroads in our careers and we both wanted something more. I have always wanted to drive the bus at Disney when I retire. So not being old enought to retire we did want to be in the South and what better place than close to WDW. After an interview last fall with a company in Tampa we made the deal and moved to Tampa. We are now only 62 miles to the front gate. With our season pass purchased in April we have been 2 to 3 times a month since purchasing. So yes there are people who move close to WDW to be closer

We have a home going up in Celebration, FL right now. We hope to close in April!

I'm SO JEALOUS!!!!!! I wanna move there SO DANG BAD that I can TASTE it!!!

If I could EVER talk my DW into moving there, I'd be there in a heartbeat! The cost of living and housing might be a little higher than where I'm at now, but the crime rate in Orlando is WAY WAY Lower than here, there's much more "civilization" than here, and I love the pace there, too!

I know somebody over there needs an EMT-P and a Teacher/Librarian with her Masters +30 and Natl Board Cert, that can hire us!!!

LOL

DisneyGerry- Please be advised that the "Peoples Republic of Maryland" requires you to maintain MARYLAND auto insurance on your car all the time it has MARYLAND license plates, even when in Florida! We received threatening letters from PROM DMV involving serious fines per day after we returned the tags.

For more info, check with people who know the insurance laws up there.

Fortunately, DW had all the paper trail covered and the patience to deal with the DMV up there. Just a heads up!

DW and I have always wanted to live in FL because we are allergic to snow and ice! We bought our first homesite in the sunshine before WDW opened, and if we knew it was coming back then, we didn't care.

If you would like more info on the many "financial surprises" we encountered when we moved down from MD, please PM me. I don't like surprises and I'm sure you don't either!

Lic Plate: Didnt know all that. I thought hard decision was to select which one we wanted on our cars.

Gerry

We head down next week for a vacation. New home supposed to be ready May or so of 2008. So, squeeze in a couple more trips before becoming Floridians.

DW commuting from Windermere to Heathrow

What is best route? Toll roads?

I guess best to bypass I-4?

Thanks

wow!how exciting!! we're in your area, nj, and the cost of living is crazy. i think you guys are first, then cali, ny , then us..we feel like we're being pushed out of jersey cuz its so hard to make ends meet. i wouldnt choose fla becuz of wdw but it doesnt hurt..

Dh and I always get clinically depressed (or at least it feels that way!) when we have to leave WDW! Our dd is 5 and she'll be at WDW for the 5th time in 23 days! Woohoo!! People think we're crazy and say there are so many other places to see and other things to spend $$ on, but we just LOVE it!

We hate to leave and we always talk about moving. The only thing stopping is is the kids. I worry sick about taking them away from their family. We are extremely close to my family and I want the kids to grow up with close grandparents. Now if we could just talk my parents in to coming with us!! Then we'd be set!

we're in the same boat..all my family is here and ours are the only grandkids on our side..his family lives in fla but they have 10 grandkids living around them so to take the girls away wouldnt be fair..but the cost of living here is starting to take its toll on us:scared1:

Whenever we leave my mom cries, I'm depressed and my dad is very upset as well. Its a terrible feeling leaving WDW. :sad1:

We're Jersey transplants too and made the big move in June. I'm extremely close to WDW and do spend a lot of time there. It would be perfect if everyone I knew and loved lived here too.

whats up jerseyite!!im a native also so only the jerseyans can understand the difference from going from here to fla.whats your opinion? would we get bored?

I'm glad someone brought this thread back to the top--I was thinking of starting one like it. :)

DW and I love Florida and I thought I'd start looking for a job in the Orlando area. Sure enough, there was a listing in my field, so I'm sending in my app. Hope it works out--we started our married life in the Caribbean and got spoiled on warm winters, and would love to get back to warm weather as well as all the other things central Florida has to offer.

DisneyGerry- Sorry to have to tell you this, but I think DW will be using I4. Not sure where you are in Windermere, but you'll need to get on the turnpike to N on I4. Turnpike will be a toll, I4 will take a "toll" on your poor wife. Hope she commutes at a time other than rush hour...

BUT! It's almost better than the Capitol Beltway!!!

I didn't read through ALL of this thread, sorry, but I wanted to say hello and add in my situation!

DH and I are currently still in Pennsylvania. The first time I took him to WDW, we decided we wanted to move close to FL. We had a hard time leaving, and a hard time driving home---we really hate it up here in the North East!

The second time (the last time), we were pretty much like, that's it. We want to move to Florida.

I'm currently working on my B.A. in Psych, and I will be putting out graduate school applications to U of F and Florida State. I had never even considered taking the Terminal Master's degree step (b/c then I would have to find a *4th* school to work on my Ph.D), but all we really want is to move to Florida. I am trying as hard as I can to make myself a prime candidate for U of F, but I'm not a traditional college student (being married and having other obligations), so that's a hit against me :( So I added 2 other schools to my list that offer a Terminal Master's. I would add more, but those are the only 4 schools in FL that are NOT in the Miami area and offer specfically Counseling Psych :-\

So, you know, if anyone has any contacts at U of F grad... hehe :wave2:

What about Auto and Home insurance in Florida? I see some companies wont/ dont insure in Florida? Like StateFarm?

Assuming Home Owners is more expensive in FLA? Auto as well?

Thanks

Gerry
