religion

I think a lot of the whole gay marriage debate could be settled if the word "marriage" is not used. Gay couples should have every right that straight couples do, but I think a lot of people have a problem with the word marriage being used to define a legal relationship between homosexuals.

I think this could also happen, but a lot of gays want to have the word "marriage" in their ceremony. I think it should be a "civil marriage" because that is completely different and separate from a "holy matrimony" or a "church marriage". It isn't performed by a church, it's performed by a justice of the peace.

However, I'd be good with simply getting all the same rights as a couple that is "married".

Marriage is overrated. All it is is a piece of paper that claims you're together with someone. If you're truly in love, wether it be with someone of the same sex, then you don't need a piece of paper to prove that connection.

I agree with you, and so do lots and lots of people. But it's just the fact that it's denied to them that pisses a lot of people off. Like, I'm never, ever going to have an abortion, but if it ever became illegal, I would fight it. I don't want that denied to me.

But just being together doesn't get you rights. There are so many rights that come with the word "marriage". Healthcare, adoption, taxes, housing, those and more are connected to your marriage status.

Some states won't allow a gay couple to adopt a child together. First one person must adopt the child alone and then the two must go to court and petition for dual custody.

If you were injured and your wife wanted to be with you in the hospital, she would be allowed because she's family. However, if my hypothetical partner was injured and I wanted to visit her, most likely I would be denied that privilege because the state doesn't recognize us as joined.

There's so much more, too.

I was raised roman catholic, but I don't follow it.

catholics aren't really all that stereotyped.

I think that would be a good term to use to satisfy both sides of this.

I think it's overrated too. But the point is that gay couples don't even have the option.

YES! Hide your children! Before I teach them about indulgence! Before I teach them that they are the most pure things on this earth and that anybody who harms them should suffer a horrible fate! That animals shouldn't be harmed (except, you know, to eat. But other than that LVS tend to frown upon animals being hurt). Before I teach them the meaning of respecting yourself and others! OHNOES!!!!

And the Satanic Bible is actually kinda hard to get your hands on. I had to special order mine through my bookstore.

Out of curiousity, Patti, how were you introduced to LVS?

Honestly, I'm completely ignorant on the whole religion.
What are the fundamentals of it?

What are the fundamentals of it?

To be honest I got into it through an online quiz "what religion should you follow". I got that as an awswer and I started thinking about it, so I did some more research and I really found that it was a great fit with my personal ideals and philosophy.

As for fundamentals, I can give you the "Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth" (pretty much our "Ten Commandments")

1. Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked.

2. Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.

3. When in another’s lair, show him respect or else do not go there.

4. If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat him cruelly and without mercy.

5. Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal.

6. Do not take that which does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and he cries out to be relieved.

7. Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.

8. Do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself.

9. Do not harm little children.

10. Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.

11. When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask him to stop. If he does not stop, destroy him.

along with "The Nine Satanic Sins"

1. Stupidity—The top of the list for Satanic Sins. The Cardinal Sin of Satanism. It’s too bad that stupidity isn’t painful. Ignorance is one thing, but our society thrives increasingly on stupidity. It depends on people going along with whatever they are told. The media promotes a cultivated stupidity as a posture that is not only acceptable but laudable. Satanists must learn to see through the tricks and cannot afford to be stupid.

2. Pretentiousness—Empty posturing can be most irritating and isn’t applying the cardinal rules of Lesser Magic. On equal footing with stupidity for what keeps the money in circulation these days. Everyone’s made to feel like a big shot, whether they can come up with the goods or not.

3. Solipsism—Can be very dangerous for Satanists. Projecting your reactions, responses and sensibilities onto someone who is probably far less attuned than you are. It is the mistake of expecting people to give you the same consideration, courtesy and respect that you naturally give them. They won’t. Instead, Satanists must strive to apply the dictum of “Do unto others as they do unto you.” It’s work for most of us and requires constant vigilance lest you slip into a comfortable illusion of everyone being like you. As has been said, certain utopias would be ideal in a nation of philosophers, but unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately, from a Machiavellian standpoint) we are far from that point.

4. Self-deceit—It’s in the “Nine Satanic Statements” but deserves to be repeated here. Another cardinal sin. We must not pay homage to any of the sacred cows presented to us, including the roles we are expected to play ourselves. The only time self-deceit should be entered into is when it’s fun, and with awareness. But then, it’s not self-deceit!

5. Herd Conformity—That’s obvious from a Satanic stance. It’s all right to conform to a person’s wishes, if it ultimately benefits you. But only fools follow along with the herd, letting an impersonal entity dictate to you. The key is to choose a master wisely instead of being enslaved by the whims of the many.

6. Lack of Perspective—Again, this one can lead to a lot of pain for a Satanist. You must never lose sight of who and what you are, and what a threat you can be, by your very existence. We are making history right now, every day. Always keep the wider historical and social picture in mind. That is an important key to both Lesser and Greater Magic. See the patterns and fit things together as you want the pieces to fall into place. Do not be swayed by herd constraints—know that you are working on another level entirely from the rest of the world.

7. Forgetfulness of Past Orthodoxies—Be aware that this is one of the keys to brainwashing people into accepting something new and different, when in reality it’s something that was once widely accepted but is now presented in a new package. We are expected to rave about the genius of the creator and forget the original. This makes for a disposable society.

8. Counterproductive Pride—That first word is important. Pride is great up to the point you begin to throw out the baby with the bathwater. The rule of Satanism is: if it works for you, great. When it stops working for you, when you’ve painted yourself into a corner and the only way out is to say, I’m sorry, I made a mistake, I wish we could compromise somehow, then do it.

9. Lack of Aesthetics—This is the physical application of the Balance Factor. Aesthetics is important in Lesser Magic and should be cultivated. It is obvious that no one can collect any money off classical standards of beauty and form most of the time so they are discouraged in a consumer society, but an eye for beauty, for balance, is an essential Satanic tool and must be applied for greatest magical effectiveness. It’s not what’s supposed to be pleasing—it’s what is. Aesthetics is a personal thing, reflective of one’s own nature, but there are universally pleasing and harmonious configurations that should not be denied.

and finally:

In recent years, we’ve wasted far too much time explaining that Satanism has nothing to do with kidnapping, drug abuse, child molestation, animal or child sacrifice, or any number of other acts that idiots, hysterics or opportunists would like to credit us with. Satanism is a life-loving, rational philosophy that millions of people adhere to. Now we’re ready for something that goes quite a few steps beyond just explaining our principles. Every revisionist movement needs a set of goals/guidelines that are clear, concrete, and that will effect significant changes.

The following Five-Point Program reflects attitudes which allow others to decide whether they wish to align themselves with Satanism or not. Each is necessary for Satanic change to take place. When asked what we’re “doing,” here’s the answer:

1. Stratification—The point on which all the others ultimately rest. There can be no more myth of “equality” for all—it only translates to “mediocrity” and supports the weak at the expense of the strong. Water must be allowed to seek its own level without interference from apologists for incompetence. No one should be protected from the effects of his own stupidity.

2. Strict taxation of all churches—If churches were taxed for all their income and property, they’d crumble overnight of their own obsolescence, and the National Debt would be wiped out as quickly. The productive, the creative, the resourceful should be subsidized. So long as the useless and incompetent are getting paid, they should be heavily taxed.

3. No tolerance for religious beliefs secularized and incorporated into law and order issues—to re-establish “Lex Talionis” would require a complete overturning of the present in-justice system based on Judeo-Christian ideals, where the victim/defender has been made the criminal. Amnesty should be considered for anyone in prison because of his alleged “influence” upon the actual perpetrator of the crime. Everyone is influenced in what he or she does. Scapegoating has become a way of life, a means of survival for the unfit. As an extension of the Judeo-Christian cop-out of blaming the Devil for everything, criminals can gain leniency, even praise, by placing the blame on a convenient villain. Following the Satanic creed of “Responsibility to the responsible,” in a Satanic society, everyone must experience the consequences of his own actions—for good or ill.

4. Development and production of artificial human companions—The forbidden industry. An economic “godsend” which will allow everyone “power” over someone else. Polite, sophisticated, technologically feasible slavery. And the most profitable industry since T.V. and the computer.

5. The opportunity for anyone to live within a total environment of his or her choice, with mandatory adherence to the aesthetic and behavioral standards of same—Privately owned, operated and controlled environments as an alternative to homogenized and polyglot ones. The freedom to insularize oneself within a social milieu of personal well-being. An opportunity to feel, see, and hear that which is most aesthetically pleasing, without interference from those who would pollute or detract from that option

All are directly from churchofsatan.com. That's where I first started learning about the religion. Then I picked up "The Satanic Bible" by Anton Szandor LaVey (the founder of LaVeyan Satanism) and that solidified it for me.

Oh No!!! Not this thread again...

I'm a committed Christian. God sent his son Jesus Christ to die for our sins and he rose from the dead on the 3rd day after his death. All we have to do to be saved is accept that we're sinners and trust in Jesus. I mess up a lot, but God is always willing to take me back. I have a personal relationship with Jesus and our relationship is like a father/child. I can talk to him whenever I'm upset or when I'm happy.

I'm also Southern Baptist, yet I hate splitting Christianity into different denominations. It separates the Church too much.

However, I love learning about different religions. I wont switch religions, but I just like to know about them.
I agree. I'm not southern baptist, but I am a christian and believe what you've just said. I love learning about different religions too. I don't think I'd switch either, but it's good to know about them so I can make an informed choice on what's best for me.

I too am against organized religion. I know my love for God is pure and righteous; most organized religions are corrupted by power hungry individuals.

I'm probably the only one who is literally terrified of religious art. I had a panic attack once in art appreciation during the time we were learning about religious art. My greatest fear is the unknown, and it's by far the most prevalent unknown in my life. I know my love for God is real, and I know he exists, I just don't know what he has planned for me after my life on this earth is gone.

Religious stereotypes are disgusting, just as all stereotypes are disgusting.

I'm not a big fan of religious art either. All the naked angels freak me out.

Seriously. I dunno, whenever I think of "religious" art I think of those horrible Judgement Day paintings with happy naked angels at the top and horrifying images of people getting ripped apart at the bottom (signifying heaven and hell). Personally, I think Hell is an emotional separation from God instead of fire and brimstone, but those paintings (along with Hell according to Dante's Inferno) freak me out.

Yea, I don't like those either. They are just scary to me. They all have a look of terror on their faces.

Why do you think marriage is overrated?

Unfortunately in this day and age, people dont take it serious enough! That is why the divorce rate is at almost 50%. :sad2:

I like the idea of marriage. I love old people who have been together for 50 plus years. But you're right, people don't take it serious at all.

I think it's so extravagant to spend thousands of dollars on one day that has a 50% chance of failing. The only thing I would care about is the dress and the cake. ;) People make such a big deal about a wedding day. I've just come to feel like it's overrated. My mom's first husband left her with no explaination and my mom and dad are divorced. I'm open to the idea of getting married I just don't know how much I really want it. I definitely like the idea of staying with one person forever though.

Oh ok. I see where your coming from.
If/when I get married, I want a simple wedding. Simple but also elegant. I dont want to break the bank for something that only lasts a few hours. Plus I'd rather splurge on the honeymoon!

Its just sad to me that the world has that view on marriage now.

I am a southern baptist. I believe in ONE God, and one God only. The one who
was nailed to the cross to save us from our own sins. I do believe everything in
the bible. I was practically raised with a preacher (my grandfather). My parents do not force me to be a Christian, its my own choice. I decide to go to church every Sunday, and its my decision to worship my savior Jesus Christ. I don't
have anything against those who don't believe in him. I can understand why, you dont believe theres a man in the sky. I do not criticize those who don't believe, and I don't try and talk them into it. I have my own beliefs and my
faith that I will stick to, and you have yours. :)

Me too, my great-grandfather was a minister and I was raised in church, but it is my decision. :)

Wedding =/= marriage.
Thank you!

Anyways, I honestly don't care what my wedding is like, I just want my marriage to be fantastic.

Marriage is a very significant step in life and is not 'overrated'. Weddings might be, but marriage is not.
