One question --

If you don't believe in science, then what do you do in science class?
Do you refuse to take the tests because they go against your beliefs?
Do you do this -- ?

Depending on what state you live in and what grade you're in, teachers are required by law to teach evolution. My teacher told us this before we started our evolutionary unit a couple weeks back. BTW, I live in NJ, and I don't know where you live, so I'm not sure if the law applies to your state. But if it does, your teacher is still required to teach it.

Please don't think I'm trying to bash your teacher or your beliefs. I'm just stating facts from what I personally learned. (:

Jumping into the discussion concerning evolution - I believe it's happening. It's just a theory, but there is evidence to back it up. Radiometric dating, relative dating and fossils are a few examples that come to mind. Scientists are searching for the uknown answers of our earth's past.

Evolution is similar to religion - there are no known answers, and the scientists are trying to find them through palentology and other fields of study, as do the men and women who seek their answers through prayer to God or by meditation.

Evolution could be true, but at the same time, there is the possibility that it doesn't exist at all, though I can't type out any facts that come to mind that could disprove the theory.

God could be in Heaven, or anywhere else we believe he is, but there's the possibility that he really isn't anywhere at all.

If I'm confusing any of you, it's because my religious views have gotten really shaky over the past few weeks. But my point is, believing in the theory of evolution is similar to believing in a religion in its own sense. Both seek answers, but the method of finding them are completely different.

I don't think Mr. Gabriel is necessarily ignoring the facts of science, he is just choosing not to believe them.

Scientists do not and will never know 100% how we came about. They can say all they want that they know, but unless they were there, they cannot say it. New discoveries are being made in every field of science every day, something could change in the future.

My personal belief system is humans began to evolve and God made us more complex and in his own image. I don't know if I truly can say I believe God made us from dust. I wish I could but I am mixing science in with religion.

Katie, I'm really not trying to offend you here I'm just genuinely curious.
In school, when you learn about evolution and the Big Bang and whatnot, what do you view it as? Like, just a scientific theory to explain things for non-believers? And do you get upset that it's mandatory to teach it?
Like I said, I'm really not trying to be offensive, I was just honestly curious.

Also, Mr. Gabriel, it doesn't have to be so black and white.
I believe in a God out there, somewhere. But just as much as I believe in a higher being, I can believe in science, too.

Science and religion can work together, if you open your mind and let them.

We've never learned it in school. Really, we haven't.
I'm a pretty devout student though so, I would probably learn it. And take a test over it.
I don't have a problem with learning it though. It's nice to learn new things. But, I wouldn't believe it. I just can't believe it happened.
I think other theories should be taught too if they're mandatory to be taught, but I don't really care that much.

I'm LDS aka Mormon. Odd one out here. I'd explain my beliefs, but they are kinda hard to explain. I'll just say that I believe in a mixture of evolution and creation: God did create mankind and they didn't evolve from apes, but creatures can and do evolve. They don't just stay the same forever.

And no, our church is NOT affiliated with the FLDS church, which is responsible for what was going on in Texas. Just wanted to point that out.

I'm sorry Mormons have been painted so poorly because of the FLDS in Texas and that you feel the need to point it out. It truly is sad.

In our school we learned The Big Bang Theory in 9th grade and evolution in 10th. So if you arn't in those grades yet that's why. We have some pretty religous people in our class and only one really complaned but well he's also really ignorant and things he'a always right... well I'm not gonna get on the whole Gay Rights issue but yea.

Me personally I'm not quite sure what I believe in. I don't really believe in a god and I believe in science and evolution more then the bible. On most other things I'm not quite sure what I believe in and just going back and forth.

My friend's a mormon.

I have a question for you guys (not trying to offend anyone).

What do you guys think of those very very conservative religious people? You know, the people who don't cut their hair and wear very conservative dresses or long skirts. Something like how the FLDS polygamists in texas dress.

So, what are your opinions about them?

Really?
So even if it's been proved a million times, if it's not in the bible, you still don't believe it?
I'm pretty sure President Bush isn't in the bible, so do you believe he's the President of The United States?

Just because science has "proved" something, doesn't neccessarily mean it's true. I know that I can believe what's in the bible, and I can't rely on science.

If you're talking about me, I am a female, thank you very much.

Why do you CONSTANTLY go on about Mr.Grabiel's beliefs? Like honestly, you wrote down that you can't say something because you'll get banned...You actually have something that bad to say to someone just because they're telling you what they believe? THAT'S sad, not the fact that we believe more in the bible than science.

And I feel very strongly on the subject of stupidity.

And I feel very strongly on the subject of other people not accepting what others believe. You're just...UGH you're making me want to pull my hair out by attacking others! Just stop already, my goodness. We're not hurting you are we? So stop trying to attack our beliefs.

In science this year at least...we only talked about one thig. We talked about evolution twice and both times me and another kid in my close spoke up and said we didn't believe in it. It didn't turn into an "attack someone else's beliefs" thing like on here....but it became a great discussion on what we thought happened and more.

I think they, by all means, can do what they want. Yeah it's strange and I personally wouldn't do that, but if it's what they choose to do I'll accept it.

I accept their way of life. And personally, I have a deal of respect for anyone that's very religious.

Just as long as they don't start to force their beliefs down my throat, I'm fine with them. The last statement goes for everyone in general. I like a good discussion when it comes to beliefs, but I don't like it when people start to preach.

Live how you wanna live. It doesn't affect me.
Personally, I think they look like they came out of 'Little House on the Prairie'.

Now, if we're talking about the FLDS polygamists who impregranted hundeds of young girls, we'll we're not going to go there.
I don't think I know enough foul words to describe my anger at these people. ;)

I think I've found the direction where I'm going religiously. I want to follow God, and I believe what God says, but that doesn't necessarily mean that I believe everything that man said God said. I know enough about science and particularly human physiology to know that there has to be something else out there. There is no way, in my opinion, that everything in the human body just came to be. It had to be started somewhere. I believe that evolution is real. I think its ignorant to ignore the fact that things evolve every day. I know enough about plants to tell you that that's true. I've seen one breed of roses become two and those two become four. Evolution is real, and I find that the people who don't believe in it don't understand it. **** sapiens are one amino acid sequence (one difference in that sequence, btw) away from apes. That is not coincidental, in my opinion.

I believe that God loves everyone, and He is the only one able to judge anyone, so I will not judge anyone's choices that don't harm me or anyone/thing else.

I've found where I want to be religiously, and this thread has given me a lot to think about, and it's really helped. Thank you all for participating.
