Hello
New to the dining plan. We are doing the regular one with one CS one TS one snack a day. The TS says the meal includes drink and dessert I was wondering can I get an appetizer instead of a dessert or is there no substitution allowed?

One of the hard and fast rules of the dining plan is you cannot sub an appetizer for a dessert. The only exception is some restaurants might let you order the cheese plate at dessert time.

About the only rule that gets consistently enforced regarding the dining plan is that you cannot substitute an appetizer for a dessert, ever.

Since 2008, when appetizers were eliminated as an entitlement on the regular dining plan, there were two reports I am aware of that someone said they were allowed the substition but one was 'my best friend's brother's cousin said they were allowed to do this" and the other appeared to be stirring the pot for a reaction.

Adding an appetizer in lieu of dessert has started many a debate. Some of the various answers to dessert only being included in the DDP are: less time to prepare desserts, desserts cost less than appetizers, there is an ability to turn tables faster since some guests may forgo dessert to being too full from dinner.

Now, there is nothing stopping you from adding an appetizer if you are willing to pay for it separately from the DDP entitlements.
