Recurrent strep infections?

Oh yeah, we know about throwing out the toothbrushes. We even went so far as to throw out the toothpaste, too! We buy new toothbrushes now when we pick up our prescriptions, just so we'll have them when we've taken a few days worth of pills! I keep spraying everything with sanitizing spray, etc. It goes away for about a month and then it is back! I have had a swab when I was well and I didn't test positive. I think there is someone with it at daycare. Ugh. Here's hoping summer brings the end of strep in our house!

My son goes to daycare 2-3 days a week, so that's a possible infection point and my mom watches him sometimes, too. She's headed out for a strep test this afternoon! Anyone have any experience with something like this? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Its the daycare. I would ask them about there cleaning procedures. I am a daycare teacher (a very clean (overly clean, think bleach wipes)) and i get it every month. In the summer, its whatever the kids have. best advice, have his tonsils removed. Odds are he has strep filled tonsils. My sister was getting sick every coupla weeks with strep. They took out her tonsils and they were packed with strep.

I feel your pain! ;)

Last January (2006), upon returning from our WDW vacation, I found out that I had it. That was the beginning of a very sick year for me. I had 8 cases of Strep that year!! It seemed that every month, I was getting sick.

My husband only had it twice that year, my sons had it twice also.

My Dr. did a lot of tests on me for immune system problems and all. Everything was fine. She asked at one of those many Dr visits had I been getting sleep at night and I hadn't. She said this could affect the immune system. She also told me something I didn't know with Strep.

I had been throwing away my tooth brush when the symptoms of Strep were gone. She told me to purchase 2 new toothbrushes. I needed to begin using one new toothbrush on my 1st day of beginning the antibiotic...when the antibiotic is done and the symptoms are gone (5 days to a week later), throw that toothbrush away and use the other one.

Apparently, this is the trick that worked. I started getting 7/8 hours of sleep and tried the toothbrush trick. Knock on wood, I have been Strep free for about 4 months now!

It's so funny, after being that sick for so long. When I feel that little tingle in my throat now from a cold or allergies, my first thought is :scared1: !
I never want to have Strep again!

Good Luck!!

It can also be harboring in your tonsils (assuming you or you DS still has them). My DD had recurring strep/scarlet fever for about 3 months. Thankfully, they decided to take out her tonsils, and it was GONE!

Just what I was going to say.

I'm thinking daycare or somewhere else you go...

Maybe local gym or playground....

I was getting it three times or more a year when i was going to our local Y pretty religiously one year...

We don't live there anymore but i haven't had strep since i stopped going there.

And z-pack...doesn't work for crap for strong cases....

I had bronchitis in Feb and they started me on zpack and it actually got worse. Had to clear it up with stronger antibiotic and an inhaler.

Yeah, we were told z-pack wasn't enough to kill strep. We've done amoxicillin and zithromycin, full courses of 10 days. Both of which worked, but a month later we caught it again!! AAAGH!!

I think I'll try the two new toothbrushes rule. Good hint!

I am an adult who has had her tonsils and adnoids out since I was about 3. I get strep at least twice a year. Ick. My kids also get it frequently. Having tonsils out will help with many things but I'm proof it won't cure all.

I'm really hoping we can get through this without having to go the tonsils out route. Since my Dh has no tonsils and has gotten strep himself three times this year, I can't see how taking my son's tonsils out would help him! Here's hoping the warmer weather brings the end of strep in my house!

What a timely thread! We are just back from the pediatrician- my DD5 has strep throat for the 3rd time since February. Last night she was vomiting from it and she is just miserable. She had 2 rounds of amoxicilin and now she is trying omnicef. Hopefully she will be feeling better soon! She usually is very healthy and we have not had a lot of recurring illnesses before now!

Wow -- maybe this is just the year of strep! I'm glad to hear we're not the only family dealing with this, although I don't wish it on anyone! As for you, belle&beast, good luck with that omnicef. It works wonders but it made my poor son sick as a dog! He had terrible diaper rash and diarrhea when he took that stuff. I hope your daughter tolerates it better and is well soon!

We went through this with one of our children. Prescription after prescription only to come right back down with it. 2 shots of penicillin at the hospital, coupled with the removal of a classmate carrier's tonsils did the trick. It has not reoccured in 7 years! There must be a carrier someplace you are in cntact wwith; no symptoms, but carrying the bug that causes the diesase in others.

This happened to my family. I kept getting Strep Throat and every time I got it, I took DS who was 2 at the time to his Pediatrician for a strep test - he had it each time. Then after our 3rd visit the Pediatrician said we must have a carrier in the family. Turns out it was DS.

Please do not follow this. Strep throat can become very serious and damage your vital organs.
We are very careful since my dd has a repaired heart defect. You can get Rheumatic fever , which is different from Scarlet fever. This damages the heart valve.
Also somebody here on the DIS had a child die recently or knew a child that died from Mastoiditis caused by strep.

YES! My mom and brother had rheum. fever. Also, one doctor believes my mom's kidney disease was caused by strep.
