recommendations for st thomas with kids

Meagens Bay is by far our favorite beach there! It's beautiful and not too far from the port, a short taxi ride.

is it safe to assume there are plenty of taxi's to take us there and back? disney offers an excursion for $50, but i would rather save some money and go on our own

There are taxis everywhere once you're into the port area.

We just walked to the downtown area and shopped a little, then took a taxi back and had lunch. But if we had it to do again we would have gone to the beach. Especially since we were the ONLY cruiseship at the port.

FYI taxis aren't what you expect; they are generally open-air (to the sides) bus style vehicles. No seatbelts whatsoever. It's a different world!

We went to Morningstar Beach in May. It was an amazing day. There was hardly anyone on the beach and it was beautiful. We originally were headed to Magen's Bay when we got in the taxi, but the taxi driver suggested Morningstar instead. It was closer and therefore cheaper, as well.

How old are your children that you're looking for things to do with?

If you do Megans Bay on your own, read up to confirm the current amount-- but there is a $4 (ish) per person entry fee when you pull up in the taxi, cash only I believe. Make sure you're ready for that, and also for the crowds since you'll be in on a ship where many others will go. It's a perfect beach with lots of space, and very calm water for the kids.

Morningstar as suggested is also great, it's at the Marriott Frenchman's Reef.

Coki Point (next to Coral World, see the recent threads on that if interested) is great snorkeling but more of a "local" beach and has a little more activity and culture than the more touristy Megans.

I did Morningstar once. We got there earlier in the morning (first thing after we got off the ship - maybe 9am?) and I felt like it was no man's land. No one was around and I didn't see the chair or umbrella rentals. It could have just been too early. I'd like to try this again but I'm not sure...

A cool thing did happen. We went into the Marriot to ask about a taxi back to the town and she told us they had a water taxi. So for $8 we took a private (no one else was on it) water taxi across the bay, past the Fantasy and then walked through the shops back to the ship.

Neat!

How much was the taxi to Magen's Bay? My husband is staying on the ship. Do you feel it would be safe for 2 women to take a taxi round trip there alone? TIA!

St. Thomas is my favorite port! I felt very safe there while visiting! We have been 2 times and I would go back in a heart beat! The first time visiting was our very first cruise so we took a cruise excursion to Meagens Bay and didn't have to catch a taxi so I can't tell you what the price would be. Our second visit, we did not do a cruise excursion and there were taxis all over the port. There were taxis waiting outside of Meagens Bay too. You should not have any issues with catching a taxi or staying safe. Enjoy your trip!

Thanks so much! Now just praying for good weather in a couple of weeks!

If I can ask, how did you get to Lindquist, taxi? Roughly how long did it take and how much did it cost?

Magen's Bay is a very large beach, so I wouldn't worry about the crowds. We were there this January. Including our ship there were 6 ships in the port. The beach started out crowded, but a short walk (maybe 2-3 minutes) down the beach and we found a large quiet stretch. I attached two photos to give an idea. One shows the area we walked from with a lot of people in the background(busy), the other (quiet) shows the other half of the beach. We loved the beach.busy.jpgquiet.jpg

Nice pictures ! How do chair and umbrella rentals work? Do you rent and drag them to quiet side of beach or are there some already there ?

The chair rentals were included with the Disney excursion. If you go on your own you can rent them, for around $7. They are all located near the main gate drop off area, so you will have to drag them to the other part of the beach. The area that runs behind the trees has harder ground and makes dragging them pretty easy. We just stacked them in pairs, put our things on top and dragged them like that.
