Rechargable Battery Info

Ok- bought the SX110 IS (see thread below) and have gone through 2 sets of regular AA batteries. I like the camrea, but that is ridiculous! I've read reviews where many reviewers have this problem as well. But, most report good uses of the camera after they bought rechargable batteries. So, my quesiton is, what kind of rechargables do you recommend for this camera for long battery life? I really want a camera that will last all day on vacation- I take a bunch of pics!

Regular alkaline batteries will not last long on any camera. It is nothing particular about your camera. I have had decent luck with Duracell rechargeables. Many people like the Eneloop batteries because they hold their charge while not in use while regular rechargeables do not hold the full charge more than a few days. One of the most important things is your charger IMO. Try to find one that charges each cell on a separate circuit. This will help prevent overcharging, which can ruin a battery.

With disposable alkaline batteries the voltage starts to drop immediately. NiMH batteries start with lower voltage but hold it for much longer, especially at high current (like a digital camera).
So, after a short time the NiMH batteries have higher voltage than the alkaline batteries and will power the camera for much longer. *Disposable* lithium batteries (like Energizer Ultimate) probably last the longest but at a high price. If you use the camera much NiMH is your best bet.

If you are doing a stretch of outdoor only photography you may get significantly longer use out of ordinary batteries by turning the flash to off.

When the flash recharges (happens at turn on if the flash is on On or Auto) there is a big draw from the batteries for a few seconds. Depending on how fresh the battery is, there could be a slight or noticeable voltage drop at that moment. If the voltage drop is more than the camera likes, even for a moment the camera may shut down and close up.

I have this camera and I've been happy with eneloop batteries. I do make sure the batteries are totally run down before I recharge. If I take them out of the camera before they're done, I put them in a small battery operated radio and run them down that way.

You can't get rechargable lithium AA batteries. However I carry a set as a backup. They will last for years on the self without discharging And when you do use them can get anywhere around 600 shots. They are not cheap, but a good backup.
