I just read a post from a DIS'er who just returned from the 1st NY/Magic cruise that the "no upgrades available" sign was out when they arrived at the port at 11:30am on embarkation day. I'm just wondering if anyone was actually able to get an upgrade even though the sign was out. They also posted that according to some of the CM's they talked to, the ship was not sailing at full capacity so I'm curious as to why they would not offer upgrades.

By chance, did anyone get sprinkled with pixie dust and get a surprise upgrade from DCL? TIA!

While the ship may have sailed at less than full capacity that doesn't mean that all cabins weren't occupied. It's very possible for there to be no upgrades.

I tried paying for an upgrade and it was a total disaster. After checking in, I was directed to the supervisor desk to inquire about paid upgrades. First, I was told that they had no access to the ships internet and thus didn't have any information on room availability. They just wrote down my cabin number on a plain piece of paper. Once the ship was docked, we had to wait for the officers to come down to provide that information. To make a long story short, I got frustrated and decided not to upgrade. Once aboard ship, I saw there was a sign at guest services that there were no upgrades available. I did see people who were like me trying to secure an upgrade. Maybe they had better luck than I did....

I didn't even think about that. I was just thinking not sailing at capacity must have been cabins available. Thanks for helping me see the other side of that.

I think I will look on DCL's website for week after next cruise out if NY & see if there are any staterooms left and then ask someone sailing on that particular cruise if they could ask about upgrade availability & see what the outcome is. I know by looking on their website right now for our cruise in August there are quite a few OV & veranda cabins still left to be booked so I'm just keeping my fingers crossed! I am happy that we are on the ship but would like a little pixie dust if I can get it. Who wouldn't? Thanks for reporting your experience!

I'm the one who reported the sign out for "no upgrades" and our server had said we werent sailing full.

I did get a surprise upgrade from Disney...a week before our 5/25 cruise I logged in and saw we had gone from a 7A to a 5A. I met someone at Serenity Bay who had gotten bumped from 7A to 5A as well. We were wondering if they gave our 7A's to guarantees and bumped us up.

I will say, we were a party of 2 and our 5A could've held 4.

That's awesome...congratulations! I guess there still is a chance then. Your news is encouraging. We are a family of 3 & are in an 11A. Have you ever been upgraded before?

The "No upgrades available" sign can mean many things. It can mean that every cabin above an 11 that is available for sale is occupied (if 11s are empty, no one is going to upgrade to them!) It can mean that they have decided not to offer upgrades for some reason--usually that they have pixie dusted people rather than selling upgrades at the port.

There are many ways that the ship can fill. All "for sale" cabins being occupied is "full" in one sense while if many are 2 persons in 4 person cabins, the actual number of guests may not be anywhere near the max that the ship can hold.
