Recent experiences upgrading PH to AP

So we are trying to decide whether to renew our AP's now and get the discount for renewal, or wait until we come back next and buy new. We likely won't be back for a few months, so it seems silly to renew now and not use them for months, but the discount is nice. When we upgraded park hopper tickets last year they gave us full value toward the AP, not what we had paid through AAA. So I am wondering if we get some discounted PH tickets for our next trip, if they will give us full ticket booth value again, and we would end up saving some money anyway. Anyone have recent experience upgrading discounted tickets? Did you get full value toward the AP? Or just what the ticket cost you?

My understanding is that there is no consistent answer to the question. WDW "bridges" ticket values in almost all cases, but DLR is far more inconsistent. It seems to vary depending on where you purchased the ticket.
