Reasons for leaving a tip

Today I had lunch at a new restaurant called American Pie Pizza Company, a casual dining chain. At this place, you find your own table, you stand in line to order your food and pay for it at the register, you get up to get your own refills. (sounds a lot like Burger King don't it?)

They had "servers" delivering the food but that's about it. Yet as I looked around I saw other parties leaving tips on the tables. I don't get it.

I remember when tipping was for service.

I dont tip at those kinds of restaurants either.

I usually don't tip at those kind of restaurants - unless we left a huge mess and are leaving a tip for the person bussing the table.

I don't tip at these either. In my mind, tip is for service provided to you and if you are serving yourself it does not apply.

I don't tip at those kinds of restaurants either. The one exception would be if I was dining with an infant who left a big mess....usually crackers all over the floor.

I leave a token tip-like a couple dollars if they bring me my drink and clear my dishes while I eat. I think those folks are not even making minimum wage. Do unto others...

There is a burger/wing joint by us that is like this. You order and pay at the counter and fill your own drink. A server brings out the food. DH always leave a buck or two, but NOBODY else ever does. I don't think he needs to leave a tip, but I'm always proud when he does!

While we are on the subject- I also do not understand tip jars next to the cash register. Its usually at places like subway/ quiznos or the small deli near my work. So, I should tip you because you rang up my order? I dont think so. There was no "service" involved.

I usually leave a little tip in tip jars if I see them at places like this.
