Okay, so I'm having this baby soon. This may be a silly question, but I keep worrying about it...what does a baby wear the first few weeks?

It'll be August. Does the baby wear a onsie all day? If so, should I put pants on him/her? Or do newborns just wear pajamas?

I know this is EXTREMELY DUMB. But I don't know how to dress my baby! Help! :rotfl: ;)

Just a onesie is fine. My dd wore them all the time the summer after she was born. Unless you're going someplace fancy...

Congrats!

It depends on the temp inside the house or wherever the baby will be. In the heat of the summer onesies would probably be fine with a thin blanket over him/her if the a/c is cranked up. I would dress them in a light sleeper at nite.

DS is due any day now and I have a mixture of daytime outfits - short sleeve with short pants, onesies with pull-on pants and a light jacket, short sleeve outfits with long pants, etc...

You'll figure it out, just fine! :thumbsup2 The rule at our house has always been - "If Mommy is chilly, everyone has to put on a sweater!" :rotfl:

I dressed them pretty much in jammies for the first few weeks. They sleep all the time anyway. Maybe put a cute outfit on for company. Even in August, the inside of your house will be cool, so you'll want him covered for the most part.

For me the first couple of weeks I put the baby in an infant gown. Much easier (no legs, no snaps, no feet) when constantly changing diapers. It can be challenging to get baby's legs, which are used to being smooshed in utero, into the legs of a onesie. Plus the onsies seemed sooooo huge!

Congrats on your upcoming bundle of joy!!

Mine pretty much wore onesies (one born in Oct, one in May), or one piece outfits with snaps on the legs. It is not easy to put pants & shirts on a little baby. DS is almost 1 now and I didn't start putting 2 piece outfits on him until a few months ago. Also with girls, I found it much easier to put DD in a dress once she was able to walk. good luck with the delivery!

I always liked the soft long nitegowns with newborns. Keeps them covered and there are no snaps to do with diaper changes. Buy a few little soft booties or socks some babies like their feet covered and then some don't!

Snap front t-shirts and Carter's sleepers.

The little gowns are ok if you're staying in the house, but they don't work well with the car seat.

They say you add one layer to what you would wear to be comfortable.

I just want to add that this is NOT a dumb question. I would much rather you ask than dress your baby too warm or too cool. Babies can not regulate their body temps the way that we do.

All 4 of mine were late summer babies. They lived in those nights gowns for the first few weeks I was so sad when they outgrew them,

Onesies
Sleeper Sacks
Diaper and a t-shirt

My DS was my first (and only) child, and I happen to be married into a HUGE Italian family. My MIL was convinced that DS was always cold. He was born in June, with a full head of hair that he never lost, and she was forever asking us to put a hat on him, or socks.

It finally dawned on me in August, that if I kept a little hat, and a pair of socks in the car, and slapped them on him before going into her house, it did not hurt me, or DS, and made her happy. So that's what we did.

Babies are really just mini-people. If you are comfortable, chances are they will be too with only one extra layer, once they've adjusted to life on the outside.

Good Luck!

My little guy wears the baby gowns...they are great.

In the hospital they usually just put a baby in a long sleeved t-shirt and diaper because they swaddle the baby.
For at least the first month you will swaddle the baby too, it helps them feels secure. The nurses will show you how to wrap the blanket to swaddle and after the first few times you will be an expert.
I did find that those long sleeved t-shirts with the foldover mitts work better because the hardest thing to do with a newborn is cut those flexible but sharp little nails and they cut up their face terrible when they are young. Don't worry, they won't scar, and don't feel guilty if they do cut their face, I don't know any baby who didn't and every mother feels like they could have prevented it.
Save your money for those cute Christmas outfits and use t-shirts and blankets the first month then sleepers. My grandson had so many outfits he never wore because it was just more reasonable to keep him in sleepers unless he went out.

My little guy lived in onesies and gowns.. .I love the little gowns!

If you are thinking in advance of how to care for your baby--you're going to do a great job! I'm a huge fan of swaddling and of baby gowns for the first few months. The gowns are so much EASIER in the middle of the night when you are changing diapers:goodvibes All the best to you and your baby.

Baby sacks are the bomb! No snaps, just don't accidently tie the sack drawstring in a knot!:lmao: Don't ask, I was in a panic that I wouldn't be able to change my babies diaper! Onesies are perfect also. Unless you take your baby on an outing to MIL's:scared1: house. Dah Duh Da....Dress your baby to the hilt:rotfl2:

And Clarabelle is right...If momma cold, everyones cold!

You've already got 2 pages of advice but I'll chime in anyway.

My daughter was born in August as well. She wore a cute onesie that had a matching jacket home from the hospital and pretty much lived in onsies or the one piece jumper outfits.

My winter babies hung out in sleepers and onesies. My summer baby was in onesies and one piece outfits most of the time. She was smaller than the other two and we had to run out for preemie outfits though - she was 7lbs! She wore preemie outfits for the first 6 weeks! Babies R Us had some cute little short one piece outfits for pretty cheap that we stocked up on.

That's not a stupid question, at all. Here is stupid....

When my best friend was pregnant with her first, we went to register her for shower gifts.

Onesie was misspelled on the store's list as Onesis.

We spent hours roaming the aisles of that dang store trying to find a single O-ness-is.

We've called those baby bodysuits O-ness-is ever since. And yes, the first had no O-ness-is when she came home. We never found them. :rotfl:

The baby wears what you put on it. Doesn't much matter. :) Mine wore the baby dresses (and they were boys) or onesies. When people came over, I put sleepers on them. Didn't want my babies being seen in their underwear! That would have made me a bad mom. :lmao: I was a dope.

Most moms overdress their babies. Rule of thumb is to dress the baby as you dress. No more than one extra layer.

You will do fine!!! Don't worry about stuff. Whatever you do, that's fine. :) Trust your instincts. It isn't as hard as it seems at first.
