Really Bad Breath

You might be able to use Ora-gel or Chloraseptic Throat Spray to numb the area a bit first, that might help with the gag reflex. If I was going to do it I would numb it up first and then use a soft tooth brush (maybe a small, toddler size one) to clean the area.

Wow. The things you can learn on the DIS board. I have had this problem most of my life. It started about the same age as the OP son. Hubby has these also. We just love each other enough to tell the other when we stink. It seems that others notice it before you do. We just call it the nasty, stinky, white stuff. When I was young, I would try to get these things out using a metal paper clip--I don't recommend that!

I'm not getting as many since I stopped drinking sodas. Maybe that has something to do with it. I seem to get them mostly when my sinuses are messed up. I do tend to drink colas when I'm sick.

I use a water pik for removal of the stones.

For anyone looking for more information on tonsil stones / tonsilloliths, here is a forum wth 83 PAGES of personal accounts... Seem like everyone who has these thinks they are the only one! They are actually quite common, but the first ENT I went to didn't know what they were

Well, it doesn't look like tonsil stones are the cause of DS's bad breath. I was kind of hoping it was, then we could take care of it right away. I'm going to have him rinse/gargle with salt water, until I get some of that peroxide mouth wash. Maybe that will help with the odor.

Man I knew the dis was full of info! I thought I was the only one....good to know I'm "normal"....:cool1: I get this when I don't get enough sleep and I'm about to get sick. I usually use the end of a reach floss handle and push it out.

I have tiny tonsils, and you would never know that I have tonsil stones. They are deep within the tonsil and I kind of have to pull the tonsil open to get to the stones. (Sorry, I know how gross that sounds!)

Post Nasal Drip can also cause terrible breath.

Has your son been sick lately? I believe that Strep throat can also have an odor to it.

I hope you can find the source of your son's problem!

I'm not even sure where DS's tonsils are. :rotfl: I've looked at some pictures so I know what they're supposed to look like, but when I look in his mouth I can't see them. His must be really tiny also. I wouldn't have a clue how to pull them open and I'm sure he wouldn't even let me try.

Nope, he hasn't been sick lately.

This - by far - has been the nastiest thread I have ever read on the DIS - no joke!! :scared:

OMG!! BLECH!!!

I have this 'aversion to holes'. I dont know what else to call it - but holes like creep me out, so all this lilttle stones in little holes and picking them out - talk is making me FREAAAAK!!! BLAH! ***shutter***

THANK GOD I dont have tonsils. I'd be going home picking at them, looking for stones to poke out. BLECH!

DS's tonsil's don't look anything like that. It's like they're not even there.

Did your son have a tonsilectomy without your permission? ;)

Perhaps his bad breath is stemming from his lack of tonsils??? :confused3 You got me!! :confused3

ARe you sure?

:rotfl: Yep, I'm absolutely sure my son never had surgery to remove his tonsils.

Q-tips just won't work. I've tried.
I don't have a water pik and they're too expensive for me to buy. Plus, it would irritate my gag reflex.

I can't do bobby pins because of the metal. I can only use gold and stainless steel as I'm allergic to almost all other metals.

As stated there, medicine droppers are only good for small stones and I don't have very large holes to get to them.
I have an extremely nasty gag reflex and I couldn't do any of these, either. I've taught myself how to arch my tongue and scrape the stones off the tonsils.

Maybe he's cold. ;)

I've got the exact same issue with holes. I can't explain it to people, but it freaks me out. I am almost sorry that I started reading this thread.

YES! Thank you!!! I cant explain it to anyone, and Ive tried googling it and cant find anything about it!!!

OT - but if you ever get an email regarding a "Breast Rash" dont open it - and dont go googling it, Im not kidding.

It was enough to make me freaky-deaky thinking about it for a few days - no joke.

It was an urban legend /snopes picture - but ...just dont open it.

I have tonsil stones too! Never knew what they were until now. I kept meaning to go to an ENT, but kept putting it off, because I was embarrassed. I love the DIS!!! Thanks guys!

Just talking about stuff like this makes my skin itch. I'm glad to hear that I'm not alone. Anyway, no offense, but I've got to unsubscribe to this thread so that I quit looking at it.

I won't open that email if I get it. Thanks
