Ready to dump my dial-up connection - any suggestions

Got Comcast Cable when DD was a teen. Came to the point that either we got another phone line(which was not an option) or go cable, so I could use the computer while she chatted on the phone line. Cable internet cost $45.00 month here, add that to the cable tv bill and ends up $90.00 a month! Ouch!
Is that the going rate for everyone else?

I'm on Comcast (PA) and I pay about $56/month which includes basic TV service. They charge you $55/month just for internet but if you're a TV customer it's only $43/month and basic TV is about $13 so I got both. I have satellite TV so when it goes out (bad weather can knock it out) I at least have basic TV.

Actually, I got faster speeds on DSL at 12000 ft from CO than I get now with cable. As I understand it (I could be wrong), DSL speed does not decrease as you get away from the CO, the signal just deteriorates. So when you get to a certain point, the signal just doesn't get through reliably. Doesn't affect speed though.

BTW, I pay $35/month for cable internet with a cable tv package. Would be $45 without the tv package. DSL is $25 around here.

We have Adelphia cable with the standard cable TV package - not digital. Total bill is $92 monthly. We took service through them because they were the first ones to be able to service us. I would have gone with whatever service won the race. Speed graded A, dependability B+.

Verizon just announced today:

Sending large files and photos, making split-second online auction bids, and outmaneuvering the competition in interactive online games just got even faster for Verizon Online DSL customers as the company triples the upstream connection speed of its DSL service to 384 kilobits per second (kbps) from 128 Kbps. The maximum download connection speed of the service is up to 1.5 megabits per second (mbps).

New Verizon Online DSL customers will receive the faster upstream speed automatically. The price for the 1.5mbps/384kbps consumer service remains the same as it was for the 1.5mbps/128kbps service -- $29.95 a month when purchased as part of a package of local and long-distance calling services or $34.95 a month for stand-alone DSL service
