Read something about US/IOA parks and now I'm worried about my kids

why am i reminded about all the (now closed) posts re Gay Days @ WDW?:confused3

It's a big wide world, different standards & beliefs - moral & political. Long as we all follow the 'golden rule' we'd all be okay - let & let live.

One thing I learned very quickly about the message boards was there are some great tips to be found, some great ideas and even some good opinions.I also discovered that there are people on these boards that really have very little to say that is helpful or even worth taking the time to read.I will never let anything I read on here determine where I go or what I do, if I see some info I like or for that matter don't like I do a little research and go from there.

I am like you, I don't consider myself a prude but I don't want to subject my family to bad things either.I have been to WDW and Universal both and we had a great time at each. I have seen and heard good and bad in both places but I tell my family we live our lives the way we want and it isn't up to us to change the others.

RELAX, be the great parent that your post portrays you to be and you and your family will have a terrific time.

FYI,
The only thing we heard that surprised us was in Shrek it said *** refering to the donkey and heard the word lesbian over the loud speaker.

A donkey is an ***. Even the Bible refers to it that way. A curse word is considered profanity by how it is used: a female dog is a *****, a donkey is an ***. Calling someone those names might be considered profanity.

And what loud speaker? Was it the PA system? I'm not sure what word you thought you heard but it wasn't lesbian.

Isn't that the truth. We started showing our dogs a few years ago, because our breeder wanted them shown. My first show, it did take me back a bit (and I am the farthest thing from a prude) when the word ***** was said over the loudspeaker over and over.

Of course, when they said "let's have all the ******* in the ring right now", I thought they meant me, not the dog :-)

It took me awhile to get comfortable using that word casually about female dogs. Now I can say it without even flinching :-)

But anybody who doesn't want their kid to hear that word, do NOT and I repeat, do NOT go to a dog show.

I can't figure out the lesbian thing either. Was it heard in Shrek or in a song somewhere? I don't think I've ever heard that word at the parks. Maybe it was "thespian" and not "lesbian"?

I bet you are so right. That word fits the show too.

It's funny how the mind works and how people can hear things that really aren't there. I did it with my 10 year old the other day. He was learning "In a jungle, that mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight" (everybody have it stuck in their heads now? I sure do) on his recorder in music. He was practicing on the recorder at home and then he started singing the chorus "Wimoweh, wimoweh". Since I am ancient and was an adolescent myself during the 70's hit, I am familiar with some of the more adolescent ways to sing the chorus. I could have sworn he was singing it that way and swung around and said "where did you learn My x's wet, My x's wet?" He looked at me with big, innocent eyes and had no idea what I was talking about. Then he started laughing. Hard. Mommy had just taught him the adolescent version of the chorus.

I am sure I am going to get a call from the principal when all the 4th graders start singing about their wet ... during music today.

Another great example of hearing things that are not there, but you are looking for them - the infamous thread last week when the OP was sure about the location of the hair being discussed in the Horror Make-Up show. She was sure it was one type of hair when all of us who have been to the show know for sure it was back hair :cool2:

Let me just throw out a little thought without responding to any other comments. Some of the best lessons you can learn in life is what NOT to do and how NOT to act. Kids learn these lessons also. My kids have seen alcohol abuse and, hopefully, learned a great lesson from it. Kids that are blinded to the world around them are often those that are most interested in the "taboo" activites.

IMHO

HI again. I know that a** is a word for donkey and in that context is not a *bad* word. But unfortunatly, it is not used in that context often and most often when it is heard it is as a profanity. Therefore even though it was used correctly, I was still a bit surprised because when my kids hear it to them it is a *bad* word. Also, "lesbian" was said either in an advertisement or song over the speakers at Citywalk and was not in shrek. My point in post this was to give the heads up to those that may be offended by either, not to sya whether or not they should be. You have to understand that at my kids age, they still consider stupid and shut up to be bad words, so a** and H*** are really bad language. ;)

I'm also so sorry that I even posted this question. I didn't mean to upset anyone I just wanted an honest from parents with small kids....

I guess my 'Prudish parenting' hasn't been such a bad thing after all!

I served on the board of the Florida Congress of Parents and Teachers (Florida PTA). One of my accomplishments was to serve on a committee that developed an instruction manaul given to parents of newborns at the hospital. We met at least twice a year in Orlando. The running joke for finding bad parenting was to go to WDW.
I did a father/son thing on my son's 14th birthday where we stayed on-site at PBH and toured USO. At the time there was a popular song on the radio that said something on the lines that you should drink Bacardi on your birthday. My son was all over that so I got into the mini-bar and made him a rum and coke (he didn't finish it). I posted this and received all kinds of criticism from the Dis. I used it as a teaching opportunity to explain the consequences of alcohol on my live. I have been sober for 24 years so my son had no idea that I had a drinking problem. I'm proud to say my talk had positive results because I've seen no evidence of him drinking in the 5 years since.
Everyone has to find their own way of parenting. If you feel that you have a question about the appropriateness of Universal you should not go.

:cheer2: CONGRATS on your 24 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :cheer2:

Loved the way you taught your son. As the above poster said, sometimes the kids shielded are the ones who experiment the most.

The most rude group of teens I ever encountered at either park was at the "Night of Joy" at Magic Kingdom. We didn't know that was going on that night and had been at the park all day when that crowd descended.

You encountered this group at MK, didn't know about Night of Joy but the crowd descended??? :confused3 Night of Joy is a hard-ticketed event. The park closes at 6pm to the public :( and reopens for paid ticket holders at 7:30pm. :duck: (need a stampede smilie here)

We have 3 (older) teens and absolutely love, love, LOVE this age. However, we like them in smaller doses, like fewer than 20 at a time. Huge crowds of largely unchaperoned teenagers are, plain and simple, a hassle for everyone else to deal with. When the numbers are enormous, the minority of obnoxious teens amount to a big number and even irritate many of the fun teens. Sometimes, we barely tolerate events like Night of Joy, Grad Night, concert nights at other amusement parks.

While I think local teens and young adults gravitate more toward USO than WDW, the bulk of visitors to both theme park destinations seems to be vacationers, IMO. So, unlike more seasonal amusement parks (Six Flags, Cedar Point, etc.), neither USO nor WDW attracts the kinds of roving teen gangs that can be a problem at some other places. Just adding my 2¢.

Exactly like I said. They did not close the park, we did not know about it. It was right after one of the hurricanes a few years ago, I don't remember which. We lost power for a week so we camped out at Pop Century and since we had APs... Anyway we decided to go to MK one day and all of a sudden the masses of teenagers descended upon us. We were still going on rides so no one was checking to see if people paid or not. The park did not close, there were no announcements, no signs in the part of the park we were at when they started letting ticket holders in. The park was dead all day so maybe that is why they didn't close it down? :confused3 We left soon as we found out ( probably around 7:45) we did not cheat Disney of anything so no flames on that one. And yes, the teenagers were the rudest, most obnoxious ones we have encountered yet in our opinion. And my DH is a highschool band teacher so we are used to groups of teens.

Anymore questions?

To repeat: we didn't know. They didn't close the park. We left as soon as we knew, which was right after they started letting them in. I broke no rule of Disney, no moral or ethical rule.
