Which documents needed for check-in?

We stay at a Disney Vacation Club resort for most of our stay, but I booked one night at Terra Luna before our visit to Epic Universe in order to be able to use Early Entry.

Since we keep the room at WDW, we will only take what is needed for the night. We booked the room through a booking portal and apparently because of this won't be able to do Online Check-In in the Loews app.

I would prefer to leave our passports in the safe at the Disney hotel, unless it is absolutely needed for check-in at Terra Luna. Would a Non-US drivers license or ID card OK as well?

We were asked to show our passports at Portofino a couple of years ago. Mind you, that's a different hotel so could in theory have a different policy. The website just says "Valid photo ID" so in theory your non-US card works. Might be a YMMV situation. If it were me, I'd just take the passport. I'd rather have it near my person anyway.

Even with online check-in, you still need to stop by the desk to show a valid ID of the lead guest. If you book several rooms, they also want to see the ID of the lead guest in each room.

With online check-in, the room card(s) should be printed pre-arrival and ready for pickup. You need the cards to enter the room and for early entry.

Agreed with Musika, I also would keep the passport with me at all times in case of emergency.

For emergencies, we still would have our ID's and drivers licenses on us. If the passport gets stolen, it would be a major hassle to have it replace in time to be able to fly back home. That's why I would prefer to leave it in the safe at WDW.
But since they probably won't accept foreign IDs or drivers licenses for check-in, do they have safe deposit boxes available at the check in desk so we could leave them there instead of inside our luggage stored in the luggage room?

Honestly I'd probably just keep it on my person. The chances of it being stolen out of an unattended room IMO are equal or better to having it stolen off your body.

I've traveled fairly extensively in Europe and US and have never had even a whiff of an issue with my passport. My personal favourite method to carry mine is in a sandwich sized ziploc bag inside a waist money belt on my body. Since I don't need to touch it, no one knows it's there. But there's lots of options out there if comfort is a problem. I probably wouldn't carry it in a bag all day, but really, I think you may be overthinking this.
