READ POST 1 & 2 FIRST-Rise of the Resistance Boarding Group Planning and Information-*No Spoilers*

I'm actually surprised that it takes hours to fill the backup BGs, but it seems to. Now I'm just gonna guess here. Perhaps people who came a little later and missed the regular BGs don't want a backup BG because it's uncertain if they'll get to ride? Maybe people see that the regular BGs are filled and give up? I've read nearly every post on this thread and somewhere people must be speculating about this, but I can't pinpoint that place. Hope this is a teensy bit helpful, @hcortesis!

The reason backups last longer is simply the huge number of people who are there at rope drop. You’re not dealing with an even flow of people. You’ve got a huge flood during the first 15 minutes and then a more steady drip after that.

Thank you all for this information!! IF we can swing this trip this year and maybe NOT be able to ride RoR is a little hard to take.
Would it be smart to NOT select one of the free dining plan weekends this summer? Looking at a June trip...

It seems like someone said that you can enter the park, then leave the park before it officially opens, and still get in a BG when the park opens. Did I read that right? And even if you've entered a different park?

Safe would be to be at the tapstiles by 6:30am for a 7am opening

Backup are not guaranteed boarding groups.
In short NOTHING is guaranteed at WDW, so even if you get a regular BG you are not guaranteed to ride,BUT if your regular BG does not get to load then they have guest recovery where they give you a fastpass for the next day. With the backup BG you are not guaranteed to ride and if your group doesn't get called there's no recovery option
How often does it happen with them giving a fastpass for the next day? We only have plans for 1 day at HS.

You have to enter the Studios with your whole group. Then you can get a boarding group. After your group gets called, you have two hours to enter the line. You can leave if you’d like or ride other rides.

if you tap in before park opening, it might work. But it’s only maybe 20 minutes to stay inside and be fairly assured of a boarding group.

I'm not 100 percent sure if this is true or not, but even if so I wouldn't recommend it. The best backup if the app doesn't work or if part of your group doesn't show as present in the park (if they are) is to go straight to a blue shirt CM. If you run into an issue and you're out of DHS, you're out of luck.

I thought this article below sums up the new process pretty well with some advice. The next few weeks will be interesting but hopefully come Jan 6th the 8am opens hold and we reach some sense of normalcy where a 7:15-7:30 arrival is good enough again. (This is my opinion on how I hope things go).

How many people are in a boarding group?

TIA
Dee

I think as long as you plan to be at DHS one morning before opening, you'll be able to secure a BG. People made it work during the Xmas to NY's week, although the BG groups did disappear extraordinarily quickly; if it's busy, be on the spot.

I think the priority should be to pick the time/price that works best for your family and conform your RotR plans around that!

Thanks to everybody who provided data this morning! We captured all the pertinent points so "The Chart" remains intact!

A couple random (possibly meaningless) DPs:
  • BG 9 has been the first BG called on 5 out of the past 10 days.
  • Over the past week "regular BGs" have lasted 15 minutes on average
  • Disney seems to be settling in to giving 100 regular BGs each day (+/- a few) on 13 hour operating days (7a-8p)
  • Over the past 25 days, there is only 1 day when all regular BGs did not get called back

Our family will be at DHS in a few weeks. Reading the stories about boarding groups being done within minutes of 7AM.

I'm concerned about any glitches in being able to use the My Disney Experience app or connecting to it.

We personally have a value plan with Tracfone (which uses different carriers) and the coverage is decent most places, but if it's not at DHS it sounds like we are doomed.

Has anyone had issues with poor or no cellular coverage at DHS and what carrier do you have?

Thanks. Would hate to be excluded because of carrier coverage and have heard wifi is unreliable.

Well darn ... I just noticed that this week's opening was moved up to 7. I'm local and not at all a morning person, and I was hoping to arrive at 7:30 some day this week.

I guess I'll have get up at 5:30 and get my first ride half asleep -- if I can stay awake until my BG is called. :)

Unknown, per Disney will.

Okay thank you

One more question please. If we get to gate prior to opening, say 6:30 a.m., do we still use the app to try to get into a boarding group or are cast members present in the area to put us into one?

Thanks again

Dee

Most definitely use the app. A CM may get you in a BG but by the time you are able to talk to them it could be a backup group. Would only use CM as last resort or if there are real issues.

I realize there's absolutely NO way to predict this - but our late April visit shows a DHS opening time of 9am. If you were a betting person, is there any possible way it'd open at 7am or do you think 8am is the most they'd jump?

Chart question: Is "# of Reg BGs" the number of the last reg BG, or the count of reg BGs from the first to the last issued? Thx.

Your magic band or app does not track your location to tell if you are in a park. All that matters to the servers and the ROTR system is whether your user ID was logged successfully tapping into DHS on that day. You could enter DHS at 6:05 AM, if they let you in that early, turn around, and drive north for 50 minutes - be 50 miles or so from Walt Disney World, and if you check the app at 7AM, you can get in a boarding group with whoever tapped in that day.

I did this - turned around and drove to AK to rope drop it. We got group 40 walking through the AK parking lot at 7AM.

However, I do not know if you can get one if you tap into another park before 7AM (not sure when that would happen, but still).

If it’s the official schedule you’re seeing, it will be that posted time. If they still use boarding groups then, you won’t be able to get one until 9AM even if they let you in at 8:30.
