Reaction to flu vacine!

Has anyone experienced a behavior / altered mental state to flu vaccine? My autistic adult son recieved a shot on Fri. Oct. 21, and began with symptoms on Sat. 10/22. Dr. on Mon./23. Thought it was a stroke, movement speech affected. Admitted next day Tues,/24 thru ER! Was barely responding, could not tell you his name, was walking with hands, arms extended like for his balance, began having bedwetting! CT, Spinal Tap, MRI, EEG, bloodwork led nowhere, Any conversation, was paranoid! Did I kill, so & so. I'm sorry I hurt so & so! Drs, fianally said what he thought is severe flu reaction. Finally released from hosp. on 10/31. Has to be promped for everything take a bite of sandwich, take a drink etc. Barely eating, or drinking. He is 29, complete self care, and very low maintenance normanly! Now almost like a 5 to 10 year old!! Don't know if this is short or long term reaction! At wits end. Has this happened to anyone before?

I am so sorry to hear this happened to your son! I've not read the insert for the flu vaccine. What did the insert from the vaccine say as far as potential side effects? Anything similar to this?

In extremely rare situations, some patients experience a life-threatening allergic reaction after receiving a flu vaccine. The CDC says these types of reactions occur within a few minutes to a few hours after the vaccination.

It takes about two weeks to build up protection against the flu once a patient has been vaccinated. The CDC says the protection lasts one year.

About 10 or 12 years ago my husband had a very odd reaction to the flu vaccine. He became very depressed and almost suicidal after getting the flu shot. It took several days before he was himself again. Needless to say that was the last time he ever got the flu shot. It's not quite the same reaction that your son had, but it's not a typical reaction either.

My husband does have ADHD but hasn't taken any medication for that since he was a teenager. I'm not sure if being ADHD could have had anything to do with his reaction or not.

Hopefully your son continues to improve and is soon himself again.

Your last sentence....yes, definitely. Part of the cost of each and every vaccine goes to the fund that pays families when a bad reaction occurs (since the govt in its infinite wisdom has made the companies that make these pharmaceutical products not liable for problems).

Make SURE that this is fully and properly reported to the right place, VAERS. If your doctor doesn't, you can. It's really important.

I dont' have any advice for you, but I wanted to extend some love and sympathy from one mom to another. I can't imagine the horror seeing your self-sufficient son go down like this. I sincerely hope and pray that this is all temporary.

I have never personally had any sort of reaction, but a friend of mine's son has Guillain-Barre syndrome - it's my understanding it is somehow related to the flu vaccine - very rare though.

Definitely check out the NVICP, and if you decide to file a claim and need a lawyer (you definitely need one) let me know. I had the BEST lawyer for my claim and got a decent (though, nothing is ever really enough to make up for what happened) settlement. I can also answer any questions you might have about the process.

Sorry you went through this, but I'm glad you got compensated. Approximately .75 is added to the cost of each vaccination to go into a fund to cover the damages that the drug companies know will be caused by the vaccinations. Victims aren't allowed to sue the drug companies, so they are paid through this fund.

There's about 2 billion dollars in that fund so anyone who suffers damages should stake their claim.

We never filed for compensation! Dr. Filed report. Here it is July, still he has periods of problems, will not eat, sleep for days, still gets rash, we now call it his funk. He is already on social sec. Disability for autism spectrum, so do not know if it is right to file for the compensation set up if a reaction occurs!

I would absolutely file for compensation. If his situation was changed as a result of the vaccine, he has suffered damages. His damages maybe harder for some people to understand, but they are real. Any monies you potentially would receive could be used to better his care, especially during "the funk" and also provide a break for you.

I do hope and pray that your son improves!

All that keeps going thru my mind are the many people who insist that their child's ASD is related to vaccinations. While the officials keep stating that there is absolutely no truth to that.

My son has disabilities which are often considered to be similar to, or may be on, the spectrum.

Dr.s keep telling me that he must have the flu shot, because of his allergies and the risk of complcations/athsma/etc. if he were to get the Flu.

I am so glad that we have never been vaccinated.
