re: orlando magic email rant

first let me give my disclaimer. i am not a homophobe. my sister is a lesbian and i used to run in her circle in my single, lets stay drunk all the time, days and those are some of my fondest memories. my oldest daughter is bi but is currently in a hetro relationship and has a 1 year old DD. disclaimer over. while "jason" was sarcastic and was obviously pushing buttons he was entitled to his opinion. dont get me wrong, you did indeed air that opinion. what you did next however was a bit much and played right into his hand. i dont agree with telling someone who has an opinion different than yours to go somewhere else and not frequent your business, now, it is your business and it is your right, i know that. but, is it good business? as soon as we discourage the antagonistic point of view we put ourselves on an i am right and you are wrong soap box and while during the initial battle you have the high ground, the result can make you look,well, somewhat less than magnanimous. i am aware that you most likely have had to put up with this kind of crap off and on your whole life but shooting this guy out of the sky isnt going to stop that, ever. my rant over. on a positive note the way you operation is structured and controlled is a breath of fresh air. most other discussion boards are littered with idiots and profanity and i cannot make myself participate in them. cudos

I don't see it as a "difference of opinion" per se. Had the person who sent the email just gave his opinion on the Magic basketball team and left out the other "pointed" references to the private lives of the Podcast crew, it would have been fine, but "he went there, so they went there". I think they do well enough that they can risk offending one person with a very closed mind. And, even if they weren't doing well and needed his business, would they really want to do business with that person anyway. There's a line that needs to be drawn in terms of self-respect and I'm glad Pete drew that line very very clearly.

We appreciate the fact that we have listeners that care enough about us to let us know when they agree with us and to let us know when they don't.

We also appreciate the fact that everyone has an opinion and the chance that we will all always agree is mighty slim.

That being said, the Podcast Crew has received an email from the person who sent the original email, apologizing for any misunderstanding.

Until we have a chance to clear this up, we would appreciate it if folks would refrain from making judgements.

I'm glad he was the bigger guy for apoligizing, but I can see his point (minus the suggesstive remarks, or course). There are people who love the Magic and I can see how they might get offended at someone calling it stupid that they should get a new stadium. However, I can also see Pete's point. I actually live in a huge transplant area as well, and there is not a whole lot of loyalty to local teams. I'm sure it's better than Orlando though. I'm a third generation Floridian, and I'm sure those are not too plentiful up there. If the Yankees are loved so much down here, I can't imagine what it must be like up there.

FIrst of all, I did not tell someone who disagreed with me to go somewhere else, I told people that have a problem with GAY PEOPLE to go somewhere else. I stand by that and will repeat it whenever the situation calls for it. If the issue at hand had been about race or gender, we wouldn't even be having this discussion, would we? Herein lies the problem.

As for it being good business - as you might have guessed listening to the show, I tend to put certain issues ahead of what's good for business. There are things more important than business sometimes, and for me, this is one of them. Is it good business for someone who owns a travel agency that specifically sells Disney vacations to criticize the product and the company? At best it would be considered counter-intuitive, yet we do it - often.

The show is an honest reflection of the opinions and attitudes of the individuals sitting behind the mic. None of it is ever run thru a "good for business' filter. If that were the case, all you would hear from us is how wonderful everything is. My comments and response to the email I received were consistent with that tenet . You should expect nothing less when you listen to the show.

I am SOOOOO glad that the original sender of that e-mail apologized for his comments, even if they were intended not as they were percived.

When Pete read the e-mail, my jaw literally dropped. The super-offensive nature of the e-mail's content just floored me. I make it a point to include everyone no matter what race, background, religion, or orientation they are.

I completely understand that many, many people are not as accepting as I am, but that still doesn't give them the right to alienate an entire group of human beings.

There are many, many, many things that people find weird about me, but when they make a point of them to cause an embarassing situation or whatever, I simply let it go, and instead of retaliate, I ignore them.

So, in the words of Rihanna...

"Keep chasing that paper,

and keep on shining."

I used to say people who don't "approve" of LGBT members to stay out of Disney, but then I realized their dollars go to support Disney's same sex partner bennefits, so I say come on over! Just don't be surprised when you see to guys holding hands in WDW.

if the comments were just as offensive and ticked you off as much, the subject, whatever it might have been, would most likely have incurred the same response. i think. but not knowing you personally i cannot really be certain. second, putting personal integrity ahead of profit is an almost unheard of business model and i think it is wonderful and most likely lends itself to some spirited discussions with anyone else who is vested in the enterprise. and lastly i dont think anyone can ever accuse you of having a filter.
